This season in the league;

with Schar starting: W7 D3 L3; F18 A12

without Schar starting: W6 D1 L11;* F28 A27

*he came on at half time or before in three of those games, came on in the 29th minute at home to Fulham, half time at West Ham away and in the 42nd minute away at the mackems.

This is big, again its people looking for 24 and under to come in and replace our aging players, when really it would have been worth actually bringing Joachim Anderson in or someone of that mould. Intangibles become so underrated when scouting players.

I'd give him a new deal as long as we sell Burn. We can't keep both. He's a good back up to Thiaw and we need better cover for Botman.

Burn is under contract and an England International. Surely some newly promoted club will give us £8m.

Burn has the extra year already and is younger so unfortunately if its 1 or the other I think its Schar that goes.

I think we likely reup Schar, Trippier and keep Burn. Less work for Ross Wilson to do in the summer

I think there is a lot of work to do already so can see the argument for that we also have history of kicking the can down the road and will have already saved the wages from Lacelles and Targett and Krafth (potentially).

However the bandaid needs to be ripped off eventually.

Pope and Burn in their final 12 months I dont see leaving (unless pope doesnt wish to now be a no2)

Trips final pay day and Schar wanting more playing time may decide they want to leave anyway.

If Livra is to leave as expect, and Trippier, I cant see us signing two right backs, a Schar replacement, a Hall back up. So Burn will 100% stay.

He's still a better player than Thiaw, tbh, assuming he returns to his pre-injury levels. I can't see Burn leaving this summer but I would be looking to invest in a young CB if possible.

I think Burn has 12 months come the summer and at least in the eyes of the manager is rarely injured and can play more than one position so I cannot see him going anywhere.

Fabi I am not sure no sign of a new contract yet, still waiting to see how he copes on his return

Tino/NEW

Thiaw/ NEW

Botman/Burn

Hall/NEW

we likely including a new keeper need 4 signings for the back 5 even if Tino stays.

Not sure my heart could take it if we see a similar announcement for Fab as Tripps got today.

I said toe same for Trippier in his thread but my decision to keep him would be based on whether we have European football next season

If Schar can accept being 3rd or 4th choice CB o think he stays but if he can be a starter somewhere else I think he leaves.

Who is first and second choice? I see Botman and then ????

For me the centre back position is uncertain and up for debate, I don't think any of them are in a position to stake a claim as a guaranteed starter after this season. Botman has been inconsistent to poor for a while, and can't be relied upon from a fitness point of view. Thiaw has been mostly solid, some great moments, but some calamitous so there's a few question marks there. Schar for me is probably still the best we have, and Burn would be his partner but their age likely means neither can be considered guaranteed starters for a season.

Schär won't be going anywhere and rightly so. We can't buy literally a whole new squad and he's still a very good player. Don't have to go back many pages to see folks singing his praises just this season.

CB needs someone to come in and take control of it IMO. I think every really good CB pairing has someone you would identify as a leader and organiser, and I don’t think Thiaw or Botman fill that role.

Exactly my thoughts on the matter, I think Schar & Burn both have that commanding presence so I would still probably lean towards them - but ultimately we need to bring someone in with those qualities to be the long term successor and build the continuity and leadership required. Those intangibles are absolutely crucial in that position, even more important than technical ability alone imo.

Echoing the above, Schar is still our best CB (providing he returns to his previous levels post-injury). Has to stay.

He’ll get another year if he wants it and rightly so. Miss the lush bastard!

Always feel the need to caveat this with I love Fab, he's been a fantastic servant.

...but much like Trippier, he looked very much on the decline last season and put in a lot of average to poor performances.

Happy for him to stay as cover, but we should be phasing him out.

Do we have an young CBs coming through? We got a bunch after the takeover but they have kind of fizzled havent they?

Maybe Alex Murphy finally gets a look in? Probably not.

Been pretty clear we are after another young CB so we will bring someone in there. Thats a Lascalles/Krafth replacement though as 5th choice.

Schar >Thiaw.

Is it not because Schar has more credit in the bank? Fab was exceptional under Rafa and for circa three years under Howe. He was an absolute warrior.

Last season though, he got beaten in the air easily, his positioning was questionable and his previously pinpoint passing regularly found an opponent. I struggle to see how it improves with him turning 35 this year.

Thiaw has played more minutes than any other CB this season and he's been very good for a large majority of them. Sure, he had one particularly poor half and has made a couple of errors, but considering the lack of rest, it's been an excellent first season in the Premier League.
