Still, I'd argue that across the season he's been average compared to the heights he's reached previously since the positional switch. The current Elliot Anderson would be fantastic competition for his place. As much as I adore the bloke.

Lush Vlad
I know Howe isn’t the sort to look past the next game. Nor should he. But I do wonder if this Southampton game would be a good time to have Big Joe start on the bench? 8 yellows already and looks odds on for one every game. 2 more league games before that difficult, to say the least, run of City, Forest and Liverpool. If he missed any of those, I think we’d struggle even more in those. Forest to stop breakways and counters. The other 2 his off the ball work will be needed. I also think he does get spells where he starts to look a bit jaded. As he has regularly played through niggles and knocks since Howe came in. Plus when he is fit, he seems to always start every game. Edited January 20 by Lush Vlad
Zero
Or start the next game and rest for the Fulham. I genuinely hope we have a fully fit Joe for the crucial Arsenal game.

I always thought Anderson's best position was as an attacking central midfielder, and unless I'm mistaken, that's where he's playing for Forest. He was for a while and even had a couple of games wide in the 3, I believe? But I think he is usually in the 2 behind Elanga, Gibbs-White and Hudson-Odoi, now. I'm quite surprised he has done so well in that position. Looks really accomplished playing there for Forest and an all round player. I always thought he was a bit lacking when he played in our midfield and seemed positionless in Howe's team. Not that I wanted to sell him, of course and he has certainly kicked on now he is getting a run of regular games.
The College Dropout
I thought we should've cashed in on Big Joe. Love the bloke though.

I always thought he looked like he would be much better suited to playing centrally, but obviously at that stage of his career he wasn't going to find a place there for us. And obviously agents do too. If we weren’t going to renew him, it would be in everyone’s best interests to find him a club asap. again love the bloke and happy that he’s here. But financially I think we should’ve moved him on.

Scoot
2 hours ago, Newcastle Fan said: is it just me or does he seems a bit off lately? Yeah he's not playing well. A lot of stuff is breaking down when he gets the ball. He's losing it quite often.
Lush Vlad
Very lucky to escape yet another yellow yesterday and possibly a red depending on who’s reffing. Was low with the studs, at least. He is becoming a bit of a liability with some of his bull in a china shop antics. But it is also why I love him.
Smal
he was sloppy on the ball yesterday and it’s really frustrating at times in games like that, but we should also note that he made the most tackles on the pitch, the most blocks and the most ball recoveries. Stuff that probably goes unnoticed.
aussiemag
I love it when he drives forward with the ball. No one is stopping him.
Conjo
Crazy opinions on here. Integral to the team no matter who we're playing even if he isn't in his super saiyan form. I'd go so far and guess our midfield loses more by taking him out for Willock or Miley than Bruno or Tonali (as long as either Bruno or Tonali stays on that is). Now we have Tonali doing such a great job defensively in that deeper spot, we can get away with Joe being loose with things at times, as there is better cover back there. His wrecking ball presence clearly unsettled teams, and makes them uncomfortable. And so let Joe be Joe. Was really unlucky not to score yesterday too, I thought. nufcjmc
He's got such a good engine and work rate and ability and willingness to play anywhere for the team. Think I said this already he stands out as the weak link of the 3 not because he's a bad player more that the other 2 are so good. I was also disappointed how he seemed to keep hold of the ball too long and gets it taken off him. However at times he's got 2 or 3 players on him which does create space for others even if it doesn't always pay off. Still worried that shoulder strapping he's carrying something too. alexf Posted Saturday at 15:49 Share Posted Saturday at 15:49 Wtf is wrong with him sometimes. I know he likes to play with aggression but today has just been stupid. Like he's trying to get booked.
Ikon Posted Saturday at 15:54 Share Posted Saturday at 15:54 (edited) Should focus more on football than running around like a headless bull. Pretty thick from him. Edited Saturday at 15:55 by Ikon

Smal Posted Saturday at 15:59 Share Posted Saturday at 15:59 think I want him to play higher up and closer to Isak tbh. It’s too risky passing the ball to him in our own half against a decent out of possession side.
