Individually, he's had about five really good games this season out of 27, and almost as many stinkers, though I do appreciate he's often doing a load tactically for the team that negates his direct output.

Still, I'd argue that across the season he's been average compared to the heights he's reached previously since the positional switch.

The current Elliot Anderson would be fantastic competition for his place. As much as I adore the bloke.

Particularly against the more technical teams where Joelinton's bulldozing can be less effective

I know Howe isn’t the sort to look past the next game. Nor should he. But I do wonder if this Southampton game would be a good time to have Big Joe start on the bench?

8 yellows already and looks odds on for one every game. 2 more league games before that difficult, to say the least, run of City, Forest and Liverpool. If he missed any of those, I think we’d struggle even more in those. Forest to stop breakways and counters. The other 2 his off the ball work will be needed.

I also think he does get spells where he starts to look a bit jaded. As he has regularly played through niggles and knocks since Howe came in. Plus when he is fit, he seems to always start every game.

Not sure Elliott Anderson is any more technical tbh, I remember describing Anderson as a bulldozer last year. I always thought Anderson's best position was as an attacking central midfielder, and unless I'm mistaken, that's where he's playing for Forest.

He was for a while and even had a couple of games wide in the 3, I believe?  But I think he is usually in the 2 behind Elanga, Gibbs-White and Hudson-Odoi, now.

I'm quite surprised he has done so well in that position.  Looks really accomplished playing there for Forest and an all round player.  I always thought he was a bit lacking when he played in our midfield and seemed positionless in Howe's team.  Not that I wanted to sell him, of course and he has certainly kicked on now he is getting a run of regular games.

I always thought he looked like he would be much better suited to playing centrally, but obviously at that stage of his career he wasn't going to find a place there for us.

I rate Anderson's technical ability very highly.

Who was in for him? Must've missed it

I do believe clubs actively ‘shop’ certain players. And obviously agents do too. If we weren’t going to renew him, it would be in everyone’s best interests to find him a club asap.

again love the bloke and happy that he’s here.  But financially I think we should’ve moved him on.
