Callum Wilson: offered 'incentive-based' contract extension (Ornstein)

Massive paycut as 3rd choice with someone like Delap coming in as number 2 would let Osula go out on loan for a year, see if he can get 15-20 goals in The Championship. Sheffield United maybe?

Osula has shown he's capable at this level in the few minutes he's been allowed to play. I'd far rather let Wilson leave and give Osula more playing time. Offering him an extention seems completely pointless. He's been terrible this season

I think Osula would benefit a lot from starting every week in the Championship, to be honest. Clearly has something about him but extremely raw.

I think he’ll find significant playing time hard to come by next year and he needs it more than most.

I can see the logic of keeping Wilson as third choice if we get a quality second striker in, and I say that as someone who thinks he’s absolutely finished. Would prefer we got someone else, but it’s third choice striker (and really if Isak and our new CF were both out we’d possibly start Gordon CF ahead of Wilson)

At 33 this just makes zero sense when a lot of the squad are the wrong side of 30.

I can see the benefits in offering Schar and Burn extensions - even Trippier to some extent but I really think now is the time for us to part ways with Wilson. We need movement and a bit of ingenuity on the bench - not a 33 year old who’s pace matches that of coastal erosion and who’s legs are made of biscuits.

I'm just struggling to understand the logic of keeping anyone, regardless of age, experience and wages, if they're not now in a position to offer anything to the team in any situation. Wilson has been a great striker for us but it's pretty clear he's now so immobile and unfit that he's now done at this and probably championship level too. It's a shame but we're not a charity and don't need any cheerleaders

I just don't get it :hmm:

Is he going to improve into a player we would happily see start 15+ games a season in the current role? I don't think either him or Wilson are good enough to be our second choice striker but if Wilson's happy to take a massive pay cut and bring third choice for a year, we can afford to use that year to let Osula get used to playing regularly.

You'd imagine it'll be with the Matt Ritchie role in mind.

What is the Matt Ritchie role? If it's to have an older experienced leader around to lean on when it matters, that theory went out the window yesterday against Everton, when it did matter and we were saved by Manchester fucking United. We were anxious, nervous, it was a proper old fashioned bottle job by the players and the manager. We were lucky and keeping the likes of Wilson at the club going forward is pointless and self harming.

Wilson also said recently he has aspirations of going to the World Cup he’ll not get there sitting on the bench behind Isak. He’ll go somewhere else to start games

This can’t be real, surely? [emoji38]

The phrase "what are you really angry about?" springs to mind.

Have to say I found his moment with the Gallowgate very moving. He's always played the alpha so it was quite emotional watching him get so visibly choked. Pity he didn't get to have one final moment of glory but he owes us nothing. People often jump to how he saved us from relegation, as if it's his biggest achievement here, but it does him a disservice imo because he was instrumental in the 4th place season too.

He isn't someone I ever warmed to as much as I should've done for someone with his record, solely because of how detached I was when he arrived. I regret that to some extent because, fucking hell was he a reliable goalscorer before the injuries caught up.

Thanks for the memories and go and batter the Championship, Cal.

I think he still has something to offer the EPL, maybe at a newly promoted team or Man Utd 😆

Also, alphas can cry

damn it dallas cowboys GIFsobbing GIF

This. We have struggled to get rid of and replace players who should have left us ages ago. Ritchie, Dummett, we even have Hayden still on our books. We absolutely should not be offering a contract, no matter if it’s a pay as you play deal to someone who has spent the last few years largely on the treatment table, and in the case of this season and towards the end of last season, offering nothing to us on the football pitch and effectively making us a man down.

NUFC under Ashley was a charity to players who never questioned his running of the club, and to managers who worked their way into his social circles. This NUFC needs to be what it aims to be, an elite football club that is only open to elite players.

The only way he'll possibly get to the world cup is as a pundit or a fan.

"Pay as you play" *sounds* harmless, but if its minutes instead of Osula then it's not harmless at all.

Not to mention it's very possible the overall financials aren't actually particularly cheap, and Eddie plans to maybe use him as second choice to Isak again.

That's worst case scenario admittedly but we just don't know at this point.

I could maybe get on board with this if he was literally 3rd or 4th choice to play in an injury crisis etc... but as fantastic as Howe is he does have his favourites and you don't want to see a finished Wilson starting ahead of younger players who need the minutes or new signings.

Only reason I can think for offering this is that our budget for signings is going be on the slim side again.

I believe we would have won yeaterday if we still had Matt Ritchie in the squad.

I mean I'm a pessimist and even I struggle to consider us being on a constrained budget yet again. Surely we have enough money to have a good summer this time.

He’s getting the ‘thankyou for your service’ Ritchie/Dummett type of offer because Howe clearly values him being around the squad. Howe will know far more than us on how much can be expected of Wilson for next season, and we know if he stays he won’t see many minutes outside of a crisis.

I can’t see him signing that anyway, he’ll still get decent offers from abroad I’d imagine. He could have one nice contract left somewhere.
