Callum Wilson set to be out for around 8 weeks with new hamstring injury (Howe)

Going back again this is another example as to why we have to get clever/ruthless with shopping players around.

After a 17 goal season last year it would have seemed mental from the outside to flog him, but in hindsight we could have got our money back and funded a new striker 10 years younger.

Now he's going to be 32 this summer and off the back of an injury hit season so we'll be lucky to get owt for him.

He's contracted until the end of next season so there's no getting rid in the summer, like. Would be lunacy for anyone to pay any money for him.

Someone will pay, we won't get much though. Getting his wages gone will be a victory.

8 goals, 7 in the league. 5th in the PL in goals/90. Not even going to mention last season.

If he's a waste of a squad place then that applies to more than half our squad.

You need the second choice striker to be reliable and available for the bulk of the games. Wilson has proven time and time again he can't be relied on in that way. Everyone gets injuries, but he's far too consistent.

You also need a fit and available first-choice striker. But it's ok for Isak to be a sicknote but not Wilson

Honestly Gordon looked brighter up there. It's just a shame that Gordon has to move positions.

Wilson looked really poor in his last couple of games.

it's even just the option of having players like Wilson to bring off the bench and give others a rest

he was so effective last season coming off the bench

now we have to run Isak and Gordon into the ground again which will inevitably result in them picking up knocks

don't even have Joelinton to fall back on anymore

can still hope for a miracle in the cup but that's not saying much

Even if he was available on a free his wage demands will put anyone off. Certainly in the Prem.

Hopefully he'll have suitors in the loan market. He'd do well to go to France or another league with slightly less intensity than the Premier League or even the Championship (given the number of fixtures at that level), and maybe, finally, he can play something close to a full season.

Wilson used to be quick at Bournemouth. Even though he scored loads last season due to his footballing nous you could see his body was basically giving up on him. It's come to a head badly this season.

Sounds really harsh typing it out. But he has to be moved on at the end of the season. Just a complete waste of a squad place and big wages nowadays.

Did someone say he’s been unavailable for over half of our games since being here? I knew his injuries were bad. But fucking hell.

Pec injuries happen regularly in the NFL. It's a very big muscle so tears take quite a while to heal.

edit: Terrible news also.

Especially with Isak being crocked for a similar amount of time. Desperately need a new forward.

I'd say veteran Shola would be taken by Eddie over Wilson. Being able to formulate some plan around actually having a forward playing would be a blessed relief nevermind how unbalancing it is across the team.

He wont go anywhere this summer.

Nobody is going to pay money for a 32 year old striker who can barely stay fit for a run of games. Nobody is going to give him a two year contract thatll even match his one years worth of wages here. He's done well to get to 32 with his injuries really.

We need another striker next season like, especially if we do make Europe. Wilson will be third choice for the last year of his contract where he'll hopefully be able to have an impact in the odd game/off the bench. His fitness cant be relied on for anything more.

If he's out for the season he'll have missed 88 games out of a possible 179 since he signed (49.2%).

EDIT: this is wrong as I forgot to count the rest of this season's fixtures as ones he'd miss. So it would be 103 missed out of 179 and therefore 57.5%. So yeah, more than half.

Exactly.

He seems finished in this league/in a team that plays the way we do. Massive shame, as he’s still a top finisher and a decent centre forward. Just never available.

Isak is a worry. But I don’t think his career has been plagued by injuries thus far, in the same way Wilson’s has.

If we got some rotation going and Isak wasn’t ran into the ground as often. Then that might help. If he keeps getting injured at the same rate. Then that would be a major concern.

Funny how some players, rather than having a particular weakness in a knee or whatever, will just pick up injuries absolutely everywhere. Kieron Dyer probably the most obvious example, Woodgate as well. Wilson definitely in that bracket.

I often wonder at times how much of this is down to the player, or if they've just got really unlucky.

A bit like the 40 year old who gets lung cancer despite having never smoked in their life vs the chain smoker who dies peacefully at 90.

Plus side, he's not Michael Owen.

It was inevitable the finger of blame would start pointing, but going into the season there was no evidence Isak would pick up a reoccurring thigh injury, while Gordon looked a more then useful third choice based on the Euros.

Wilson was just coming off an excellent spell the year prior, with far bigger priorities in the squad to address. It seemed a pretty adequate position to be in.
