I was there as well. I'll be honest, I couldn't remember the scorers so had a look on nufc.com and yes, you're right - two from Mira, and a Pallister OG. Having a look at those games was also a reminder of the win at Liverpool, so that's another legacy for McFaul as manager. Remember at the time not being able to quite believe it, one of my biggest buzzes in my early days of supporting NUFC.

Very decent manager and man, not much he could do after losing Beardsley and Gazza in successive seasons. 88/89 was a dreadful season, one of the worst I can remember. The couple before that were enjoyable. RIP Willie.
GideonShandy
Variously listed as Iam, Liam and Willie. Remember the invariable chant of "McFAUL, clap clap clap" as he made his way to the Leazes End goal before either the first half or second half kick-off depending on which side had won the toss. Keggy_Keagal
Proper club man . Did his best for us and was manager during an exceptionally difficult time with any half decent youngster being shifted for cash and the club itself in utter turmoil. Optimistic Nut
Frank Clark to attend tomorrow with him being a former team mate and ex-Forest manager would be a lovely touch.

It's a shame it all went wrong for him at the start of the 88/89 season, but what he achieved with that squad the previous season was pretty phenomenal, it made a lot of fans very proud. The thing I'll always remember about Colin Suggett's time in charge was that win v Middlesbrough. Pretty sure we beat them 3 zip. He was fighting a losing battle since there was a tidal wave of animosity towards the club at that time after we had sold Gazza that summer and the Sack The Board campaign really got going. That 87/88 season was one of my most memorable though, we really played some great stuff and obviously Gazza was right at the centre of it all. RIP Willie, a true NUFC legend. madras
My mam will be distraught, she had a right soft spot for him. Lovely bloke as well, met him when he was a player then in his various other roles. I scored 2 past him when I was 14 and he didn't just let them in. I'd love to see how some of today's keepers would cope without gloves ?

Billy Warthog
My first NUFC match I attended was a 2-1 victory over Leicester at SJP on 30th November, 1985. There was snow all over the Gallowgate, resulting in the biggest snowball fight I've ever seen. Jeff Clarke and Peter Beardsley scored for us. Only 17,300 in attendance. Willie McFaul was the boss. RIP.

RIP. Been trying to remember what game that was for years! I always stood in the Corner and I seem to remember the “fight” was mainly between the Gallowgate and the Corner. Shame that mobile phones were not around at the time, would have made for some great photos! looking at the reports the Leicester goalkeeper was also bombarded when the players came out and a tannoy announcement was necessary to stop it. ennyoueffsea
Remember going to Maine Road in January 1975 and saw probably the best goalkeeping performance in all my time going to matches. Willie had a fantastic game and whatever Man City threw at him he was equal to it all. Came away with a 2-0 win in the cup. Weirdly, was back at the league match two weeks later, with exactly the same starting 11 and lost 1-5. 😲
Terrymac1966
Willie McFaul Wyn Davies my heroes are dropping away. I was born 1956 so my formative years had these absolute stars all over my bedroom. I was at every home Fairs Cup game and wept when we won it. Gratitude for there very existence in my life 🌹

Threw a bog roll towards the pitch for some reason when Mira's pen went in. Seem to remember a lot of trouble outside the ground - scousers being magnanimous in defeat, as they're all known for.... 🤨 Still got relegated that season, mind. Wallsendmag
Really annoyed we didn't recognise Willie McFauls passing with a minutes silence today considering his connection and achievements with the club as a player and manager. He was a club legend. With all due respect we had a minutes silence for Diego Jota and whilst that was tragic he had no connection whatsoever to Newcastle United. Willie McFaul played nearly 300 times for us, including playing an absolute blinder at Ujpest Doza and also managed us after that. He even lived in the area in area in his later years such was his connection to Newcastle Upon Tyne.
