The UK seem to take ages, am not sure why though, can’t have a wake with someone laid out in their bed, be all stinky by then surely. They’d only delay something if an autopsy was required, otherwise it’s a few days.
Decky
If you think the quick days are mad it's worse than that. If someone related to you dies they're in a relatives house, or even your house the next day in an open casket for two days of visitors then the funeral on the 3rd day. It's pretty crazy after things like accidents or suicide how intense it can be. But then maybe it's good to get it over and done with so you can be left alone to grieve? I kinda hate the idea of waiting weeks for the funeral too. Edited July 4, 2025 by Decky
Decky
Of course the news has a live feed outside the church watching mourners go in and out.

People just drop everything and head over if the person was close enough. Because it's normal here you can get time off work and that no bother usually. I just can't see how your meant to tell everybody so soon tbh, or the fact he died in Spain then wham bang the bodies in Spain the next day apart from jotas fame and money

It's weird tbh cause I agree it's good to kind of get it out the way and be left to grieve but I'm so glad that wasn't the case for Matteo and Nicoló. Registering births and deaths just 10 days after their birth and then not having a network of folk at the funeral, as we did have, some 3/4 weeks later would have made the whole thing all the more unbearable for us. In some weird way the delay until the funeral preserved their life in my eyes. They were my sons in their purest form for that extended period of time. Kanj
Really struggling with this one. Just makes you think how quickly it can all come undone and be left without your partner, brother, friend, dad, kid, etc etc etc and it’s got me proper emotional. "I will cherish these moments forever" hit me pretty hard too. We say things like this without realising that "forever" can actually be a matter of days or weeks. Really sad stuff. joeyt
This isn't supposed to come across as insensitive but what happens to Liverpool and insurance in cases like this? Is there any sort of insurance for circumstances like this? Or do they just have to write off a £60mil asset because of tragic, unforeseen circumstances? gbandit
I would imagine, and I have no actual expertise in the area but these players will surely be insuranced to the hilt on career-ending injuries and death. I’d imagine insurance would pay up for things like the wages on the contract. Not sure how insurance would apply to Liverpool in terms of money to cover the loss of their player but I’d imagine there’d be a lot of money coming to them for that too. Couldn’t watch and can’t really engage with anything about the funeral, there’s no way I’d have been able to watch any of it
rgk_lfc
I haven't processed this event. Each time I look at the title of this post and the news, I stare in disbelief. Jota was a proper footballer. He was not the fastest, not the most skillful, and not the strongest. But he understood football. If you closely observe him play, you would get what I mean. Brilliant at roaming and finding space to receive the ball, then a couple of twists and turns to give himself half a yard of space, and then bam - a goal. Everything he did on the pitch oozed intelligence. He would have a spot in the squad for any team in any era. There would be a spot for him in Keegan's Newcastle, Robson's Newcastle, Ferguson's Man United, Wenger's Arsenal, and Mourinho's Chelsea. Understated and impactful, efficient. Not the tallest but a brilliant header of the ball. Mourinho said it best - he is not from this generation. You all know what he implied - somebody who had to fight to reach this level and appreciated every second of it. No flashy clothes, none of this bullshit sagas with transfers or demands or wages. Generous, kind to others, and always had time for the fans. Goes around helping people without advertising himself on social media.
