I  haven't processed this event. Each time I look at the title of this post and the news, I stare in disbelief.

Jota was a proper footballer. He was not the fastest, not the most skillful, and not the strongest. But he understood football. If you closely observe him play, you would get what I mean. Brilliant at roaming and finding space to receive the ball, then a couple of twists and turns to give himself half a yard of space, and then bam - a goal. Everything he did on the pitch oozed intelligence. He would have a spot in the squad for any team in any era. There would be a spot for him in Keegan's Newcastle, Robson's Newcastle, Ferguson's Man United, Wenger's Arsenal, and Mourinho's Chelsea. Understated and impactful, efficient. Not the tallest but a brilliant header of the ball.

Mourinho said it best - he is not from this generation. You all know what he implied - somebody who had to fight to reach this level and appreciated every second of it. No flashy clothes, none of this bullshit sagas with transfers or demands or wages. Generous, kind to others, and always had time for the fans. Goes around helping people without advertising himself on social media.

Lovely post

An extremely annoyingly good player but it’s been really touching to read all the tributes to him, obviously an absolutely sound and likeable bloke. Thought the statement from Slot was perfect. Huge loss to LFC and the game as a whole.

Whether you intended it to be or not, that was a beautiful tribute to a fantastic player and family man

Reports coming out that Jota was driving, and at high speed. Not at all surprising, but what a tragic and unnecessary loss of life.

I do hope this is a wake up call to other young men, in similar positions of fame and affluence, inclined to drive in a similar way. Maybe it can save some lives in future.

Mr Blonde died on the same day, great actor.

Rest in peace to all 3 of them, and the thousands that also died yesterday. Thoughts to the families.

Bloody he'll,I just noticed that Val Kilmer and Dawn from Buffy died this year too. Dawn was only 39, beautiful lassie.

It's amazing how many celebrity deaths go unnoticed,  never mind ordinary people.

Micheal Madsen is dead? WTF??????? Loved him!

Ideally no-one would speed. I'm overtaken needlessly pretty often as I tend to stick to the speed limit but people always have to rush for the sake of a few minutes, I guess.

The thing with these supercars is they're made to be driven hard and fast. They entice you to drive them that way. One could argue you need to be a very good (even professional) driver to handle them safely.

Problem is, at those higher speeds, your margin for error becomes way smaller and your risk of serious injury/death way higher. But sadly, many drivers don't fully realise this till they're losing control, then it's too late.

Obviously a tire blowout isn't usually foreseeable, but if you have one while going the speed limit, your chances of survival are much higher. Just desperately sad all round.

I absolutely hate people who go 100mph + constantly. I've got mates that do it.

You're not just risking your own life, but everyone else on the road. It's absolutely ridiculous that people find the need to speed - just leave earlier ffs.

How many times have we all been in the car and someone has sped past us only to get stuck at the very same traffic lights? It's a disgrace and needs stamping out of society. Even to this day I hate driving on certain roads and I've been driving nigh on 17 years.

Hugely sympathetic to Jota, his brother and especially his family, but it must hurt them even more now that they know that it was ultimately an avoidable death. It's a huge shame and hopefully a wake up call to the boy racers out there. It won't be.

100% this.

Also modern cars are so easy to drive that it's almost distracting people from the actual thing of driving.

Aye there either needs to be built in devices that limit speed (like that thing new drivers get) or a much harsher punishment than a slap on the wrist and some points on your licence.

I've seen the idea floated before that everyone undertaking their driving test should be made to go through a course that highlighted the dangers of speeding (and drink/drug driving) with some real life stories/examples. My Mrs done jury duty about 5/6 years ago and one of the cases was some knobhead speeding to get through a light as it changed from green to amber - ended up killing some poor person (can't remember if male/female). She said it was absolutely heartbreaking, so showing this type of tragedy would sharp wake up 95% of new drivers. The 5% are the type that will never change.

When I drop my kids off at school on a morning, it never ceases to amaze me the amount of people bombing through going at least 30mph. It's actually a 10mph zone during pick-up/drop off time, and the roads are rammed so it would be very difficult to spot a child running out between cars.

I'm constantly drilling it into my kids about road safety. Honestly as a parent I could say that it's one of my biggest fears - the worst bit being your child could do everything right, it just takes one dickhead going too fast to ruin everything.

I think top speed of cars isn’t the issue as much as acceleration, particularly on the average electric car now that comes bombing onto a roundabout or out of junctions. Combined with the average persons view of vehicle maintenance, cheap part worn tyres etc it’s a huge danger.

If he survived he'd likely be facing manslaughter charges. What a waste, speeding drivers are wankers.
