Thought we had a one lined up.

I believe so. He's enroute on a slow fishing boat from Canada. Should arrive by late Autumn, that or he's walking up from London.

Genuine question but I'm curious if anyone can articulate for me what they think makes a good DoF, especially when judging their previous job(s)?

No banal stuff like "gets along with manager, runs the footballing side well, etc" because those are automatic table stakes already

Can't deny it rankles me a little bit how they've gone and replaced their man in the space of a day and we're like half a year in to our search.

Stab in the dark here but I reckon they may have had him lined up longer than a day.

Aye, Monchi’s clearly been sacked, whereas our two former DoF’s left of their own accord.

Don’t think he was sacked, seems like he left for personal reasons.

From the Athletic:

Quote

Monchi is returning to his native Spain — largely for personal reasons — but is expected to remain in an advisory capacity to Villa’s ownership group, V Sports, as part of plans to restructure the football department.

Someone who’s ‘hands on’, has a lot of experience at different jobs in football and, most importantly, is very well connected so can pick up the phone and speak to the top agents, etc.

It is hard in this day and age, but generally someone who seems to go under the radar - a bit like James Bunce. These might come across as automatic, but:

Someone who understands the football side of things, but has links to executive or business operations. If the goal is to be the best club, then it might be the Director looks at selling Isak at £130m with a view to how to operationalises the business part of the club, but then influences the sporting remit i.e. future recruitment or the playing style.

Essentially the person driving the vision from the football operations side with the Performance Director, Head Coach, Technical Director and other key roles like recruitment so club is moving in same direction. The person that can make good short term decisions with a long term goal in mind. Eddie Howe clearly has an ability to develop and improve players which likely influences the recruitment strategy. What is apparent is our summer recruitment we went for players that might have just been out of reach for us at the current moment which you could argue set us back to revert to the likes of Thiaw, Ramsey, Woltemade etc. There is the underlying factor with bringing in players like Minteh previously who could be sold for a profit or become part of the first team - where ultimately Jack Ross will have to report into the new Sporting Director.

Simply - is the first team performing well? Does the academy produce players talented enough for the first team? How has the recruitment been including player sales? Are we technically sound i.e. medicine/physio and sport science or data? If you think most of these are positive then I'd say the Sporting Director is doing well.

Infrastructure in terms of the training ground and sports medicine to reduce injuries/maximise performance. I'd then say an umbrella philosophy that covers player and management recruitment, and youth teams to ensure a club is consistent in their approach. Lastly the use of data in all of the areas above.

How to judge a previous role? Somehow measure all of the areas above.
