This is a myth that keeps getting peddled on this forum. The elusive DM that’s the missing cog, that will unleash the “real” Bruno. The reality is that our style of play doesn’t require a more defensive minded player in the middle of the park. We keep possession by pressing and recycling better and faster than almost any other club in the PL. Every one of our midfielders has legs and cleans up their area of the pitch with ease, a traditional DM or more defensive minded player will bring nothing to our set up and, I believe, actually hinder the way we are playing.

I’d prefer another Bruno, and the fluid flexible midfield it would offer, but I’d take that Alvarez dude from Ajax in a heart beat.

Yep, I'm OK with signing a "DM" to let Bruno play further forward but if we do that the player should be someone who is comparable to Bruno in the way they play.

It's not really a defensive player in our system as a lot of what we want from that role is someone who can break the press when we're trying to play it out from the back and someone who can pick a pass in opposition territory when possession is recycled back to them.

Bruno is great as he can continue to play that role as we've seen this year if we went for someone more attack minded but he could be pushed further forward if we went for a deep lying playmaker.

Personally lean towards leaving him in the position he's played this year and signing someone like Maddison. Would be a great mixture of players having a Joelinton, Bruno and Maddison midfield trio.

Eh? We are clearly playing with a more defensive midfielder now though? Longstaff is essentially playing that role from RCM we've been more or less playing with a lobsided double pivot with him and Bruno for a while now and letting the two Joe's interchange in the left.

We need quality on the ball more than anything in the midfield. A ball playing CM with Bruno to the side doesn't make us worse IMO. Put a Rodri or someone in there and Longstaff dropped and we are miles better.

The only thing I worry about with Howe is the sheer amount of football he consumes. It’s his best trait but I just desperately hope it doesn’t burn him out. That high performance podcast made me a bit scared that he doesn’t seem to enjoy things at all in the moment but maybe many great coaches are like that because they’re perfectionists and always know there are things that need to improve

?????????? hopefully the stats of the missed goals opportunities will be put to bed soon enough, just like his old defensive stats! ?

Sorry to keep banging on about it, but this stat just makes me angry every time I see it, because the only game we lost this season was against Liverpool where we got cheated out of going 2-0 up and winning the game.

That’s so lovely of Eddie and triggers a nice memory of my son playing (under 8’s) in front of Guardiola on his unveiling at City. Lost interest a bit in football but still has signed shirt/beaming smiley picture on his wall.

Knowing how he is person who always wants to improve, he's probably gutted looking at that stat and be thinking he would have loved to turn those draws into wins rather than setting records. I bet you he's already studying the art of that right now.

That goals against stat though. Fuck me how well have we done in that aspect. The cunt Bruce with his 'attacking football' philosophy ffs.

Just wondering if we could flip the line ups and play more attacking line up to start and then the usual starting line up after 60+ to see out games?

Obviously this is only if the current starters are still struggling for goals of course. Tactic also only really works as long as the attacking players do the business early in the game and they give the more defensive line up something to see out.

But yeah i just wonder, cus clearly our 11 we field at the moment don't give up many chances and are rock solid.

But instead of bringing on ASM and Isak late in the 2nd to try and create something, perhaps starting them and going for it from the first minute and then bringing on a fresh Joelinton/Willock/Longstaff (if any of them had to drop out) would be ideal for seeing out the game with high energy pressing.

Would like to see it maybe trialled in one of the legs of the cup but I trust Eddie to find the best solution ofcourse.

Interesting to see only one of the other entrants there comes in the past 15 years or so. Shows what an achievement it is.

Exactly what I thought when I saw that stat. The Liverpool team (most recent) on that list did it playing very similar football to what we are now, albeit with a much bigger squad. Very impressive indeed.
