I don’t think Hall has been fit and we were managing his minutes and he still did picked up a knock. He will be back at left back when we are happy he’s healthy.  We are missing a pacy striker for away from home.

Hall was in every squad from the beginning of the season but only started when we played five at the back against Bournemouth and as part of a changed side against Bradford in the league cup. To me Trippier and Livramento are clearly our first choice fullbacks and our bigger problems anyway lie further forward, with the shape of our midfield, our use of the ball and the challenge we face adapting our attack with a striker in Woltemade who likes dropping deep and wide players who are better in a supporting role. Wissa should help but I'm curious how we're going to fit him into the side.

I think we’re going to change formation or playing style to accommodate both wissa and woltemade, personally. They’re too (a) different and (b) (theoretically) complementary not to at least be tempted, surely. I’d love us to try a 4-2-3-1 for a few games with those two involved, think we could pass and move a few teams to death and it would bring out the best in Woltemade (and stop teams double teaming him as is currently happening).

That’s pretty flawed analysis @Gottlob. Hall was recovering from an injury and wasn’t anywhere near match fit when the season started. Then, when he got to the point of being match fit he got a hamstring injury that’s kept him out until the other day. Tino is a first choice full back, that’s not in question. Hall played as first choice left back for the vast majority of last season. Trippier will be phased out very soon in favour of Tino when he recovers from his injury. Left-back should be Hall’s as soon as he’s match fit but we know Howe has basically never dropped Burn if he’s fit. So, the question I think that will come up from tomorrow onwards is -

Does Howe drop Burn and play Hall at LB, does he drop Botman, play Burn at LCB and Hall at LB or does he try to play them all in a 5 or a 3 with more advanced wing backs. Tomorrow, I personally think he’ll play Burn at LB and Botman at LCB and Hall will be on the bench. However, there’s absolutely no way Hall can be kept out of the side after tomorrow’s match unless it’s injury related

I think Hall's really talented and he improved rapidly last season and was having a strong campaign until he got injured. Then Trippier came back in and Livramento, who had been inconsistent down the right, started excelling down the left as we won the league cup and went on a good run of form towards the end of the season. Hall was coming back from an injury and wasn't match fit at the start of this season, but presumably could have played more if we'd needed him and my own sense is that Trippier and Livramento at this point will be our first choice fullbacks with Burn, as you say, possibly also preferred to Hall especially if Howe wants to keep it tight down the left.

Anyway the gist of my point is that I don't think our patchy form at the moment can be attributed to Hall and Livramento's absence. There are other issues we need to sort.

Our patchy away form is down to our disjointed attack. It's not the direct cause, but having no threat from full back certainly compounds it.

We can’t stretch teams on the break like we did with Isak. I think if you’re playing Woltemade away from home you need serious pace out wide and at least one of the midfield 3 able to run beyond him regularly.

I think the City match will be tell us a lot about Howe really. Hall will be fit to start by then and he’s going to have to make big decisions as you say. He doesn’t want to drop Burn but clearly Hall is the best option at LB and for the teams overall play. I would say it’s probably between Burn and Botman at CB and I hope he doesn’t keep persisting with 5 at the back at avoid having to drop someone. We do also have plenty European games to come so I don’t see an issue in rotating Burn at CB.

I’d really like to see Howe get the fullbacks back into the side to help our overall play and build some patterns of play and form heading into the derby. I’m sure Howe will be aware of this too. A few good wins before the derby and we’ll be right up for it whereas currently everyone is a little bit apprehensive understandably.

We've gone from playing with initially Wilson and then Isak who are both off the shoulder strikers to playing with Woltemade a converted number 10 playing as a striker who likes to link play adapting to a new country and a far quicker and more intensive league. The signing of Wissa was made in an effort to mitigate this issue in the short term and the fella got a serious injury. Look how different the side was when we played Chris Wood (who I'm sure was as much about weakening Burnley as it was about having him play for us). We've both dynamic full backs injured, a winger who's just come here and is struggling to adjust and another winger who's been more up and down than Jordan's arse. Then you have Murphy who for vast swathes of a game can look completely lost then suddenly provide an assist or a goal. Also, Joelinton's being asked to do a different role and support the attack whilst also doing his usual muck and bullets work, this while struggling with injuries and inconsistency himself. In the shorter term we've had illness in the camp affecting  key players in Tonali and Bruno as well as yet another boardroom/club structure reshuffle. Despite all this we're going well in the Champion's League and progressing well in the League cup. The league form needs to improve but Eddie's traditionally shown the ability to go on winning or unbeaten streaks and based on previous seasons one could be just around the corner.

I do wonder if he's thinking about bringing in a new coach.

Just to bring some new ideas into the mix.

Come May they will all get replaced the way this is going. There is no way the owners will accept finishing in the bottom half of the table.

I really hope he will turn this around.
