Festive run is just about getting the points because games are thick and fast, and each one will have their own unique situation because of the closeness of the games. No need to over analyse the Burnley game unlike Sunderland in comparison, it’s just about winning the next 2, rest players for cup game, big league cup game to get an advantage to hold on for 2nd leg, beat Wolves then evaluate from there. Should be 9 points in league and cups be what they be.

Anything less in league then it’ll be more fair game to question things. Right now it’s crack on with the quality we’ve got and show it.

It seems to have been lost in all of this, but Lee Ryder said that it was "an hour at Burnley where it was just an onslaught"

I don't think anyone who's reasonable would agree that whatever you want to describe it as was an hour.

I’m not in love with his comments about the lack of a plan B and about how many different ways we have of playing. As I don’t think we’re really seeing that at all this season.

Plus our Plan A that served us so well is now fairly flawed and teams have gotten a lot better at combating it. So there needs to be some change.

However, I think a lot of managers say similar and are wedded to their plan A and just working harder. Rafa when he was here. Klopp. Pep has adapted over time. But he still sticks to his principles and wants his team to play a certain way.

I don’t really have an issue on his comments on Plan A/Plan B, I can certainly see the logic behind it.

The problem I have is I’m often not really sure what Plan A currently is as we look disjointed and lacking cohesion.

I’m also slightly confused by his comments on the players needing to execute Plan A better because his lack of substitutions, or substituting the wrong players is my biggest gripe with him. If Bruno isn’t executing Plan A, get him off and get someone on who will rather than taking off an easy target like Barnes.

It does help though, going into games knowing this is his thought process as I won’t sit screaming at him to do things like Wolte and Wissa up front, as I now know it isn’t an option. Keeps the blood pressure down.

I liked his explanation to the club media after the game, about showing his confidence in the players to see it out, in turn theoretically giving them confidence. He always knows what he's doing and the logic to his decisions is understandable, even if you don't necessarily agree.

I liked the question and answer this morning in the press conference. Whilst I don’t necessarily agree with what he said about plan B (or lack thereof) it was good to get an insight into his thought process.

I would like to see more proactivity with the subs - made earlier and not just what seems to be like for like. Sometimes they come after the setback of conceding. The subs did help Tuesday mind, we weren’t troubled after them.

Howe is always extremely professional and gives nothing away, literally says just enough usually. So it was good to perhaps see something different.

To add - I liked his comments about how this is a huge month and we are running out of opportunities to make our mark on the season. Feel like we might see us rise up the table in the league.

He’d make a good politician.

This is what I really like about him, after years of absolute shite (besides the Rafa years) from utter charlatans who were just rolling the dice with a "Let's play" attitude. I have disagreed with some of his tactics and subs but always find myself explaining why I think he did it to whoever is unlucky enough to be listening / reading.

Aye, I had to be careful how I phrased it because I've not watched the reply I've just read it and I'll happily accept your view of it - although I do think Klopp is an utter arsehole so his answer doesn't necessarily help

bloody successful arsehole to be fair though 😂

I was going to type a reply myself but this is basically exactly how I feel.

I assumed that the moves we'd made in the summer was to allow us to play the high-tempo style that served us well as Plan A previously (which I thought was a fairly good idea) but I'm not even sure what Plan A is now, never mind Plan B, Plan C...

2025. Most wins in a calendar year since?

A nice mirror image of 1995 in a way as well. Us struggling from January to May 1995 in large part because we sold our star striker and had to relearn how to play together, then from August to December 2025 we struggled because we sold our star striker and had to relearn how to play together double Champions League qualifying and League Cup winning manager Eddie Howe suddenly stopped knowing what he was doing.

Following up on the idea that we're "massively underperforming" and the general lack of appreciation of Eddie Howe from some... another thing I don't really understand is why his League Cup record seems to be taken for granted.

  • 20 games - 16 wins, 3 draws, and 1 defeat in normal time (2-1 in penalty shootouts)
  • 3 semifinals in 4 seasons (only one other in the club's history)
  • 2 finals (only one other in the club's history)
  • 1 cup (only one in the club's history)

For a club that has been desperate to win anything I'm not sure why there already seems to be a been there, done that kind of attitude towards it. Maybe because it's the League Cup? Or an assumption that there's nothing special about the above?

Here's every club since 2000 to reach the semifinals three times in a four year period:

note: I used AI for this but pretty sure it's right

  • Arsenal (2003-04, 2005–06, 2006–07, 2007–08) ~ 4 in 5
  • Chelsea (2004–05, 2006–07, 2007–08)
  • Liverpool (2021–22, 2023–24, 2024–25)
  • Newcastle United (2022–23, 2024–25, 2025–26)

Many of those involved managerial changes, so that also means Eddie is just the third manager this century to do it joining Pep and Wenger (Wenger never won it).

And in this "lost" season we still have a chance to become repeat champions. How common is that?

  • Manchester City 2018-21 (4 in a row)
  • Liverpool 1981-84 (4 in a row)

So Pep, Paisley, Fergie, and Clough. That's it. While the odds are against us, Eddie joining that group is in play and for some reason there's a not insignificant number of people ready to move on.

Ironically it’s exactly the league cup form that makes me wonder if Eddie is in fact more suitable to cup games rather than league games.

Impressive research Ed. This is the kind of thing I want AI to do but I find is hopeless at it. If it was AI assisted, please tell us which one. I try asking questions like "NUFC record in games with 7:30 or later kickoff times" or "NUFC record with Tino and Hall at fullback" but get little joy.

I couldn’t find a single page with semifinalists, but the info is out there spread around. It weighed a bunch of potential sources and I think settled on scraping from each season’s wiki page. I spot checked some.

It would struggle with the type of examples you mentioned though unless you were providing the database. It doesn’t have access to Opta data or anything.

Quality work @timeEd32

Not sure I’ve seen many belittling the League Cup or taking his record for granted? Only a handful that seemed to be suggesting losing to Fulham with a weakened team was fine. As we won’t get past the semis, anyway.

For all my gripes about Howe over the years. In cup games and big one off home league games against the top sides. He is usually outstanding and we can give anyone a run for their money.

My interpretation of what Howe was saying is that there is only a Plan A with a clear framework and set of principles and tactics underpinning it.

Plan A however can evolve from X to Y, but will remain Plan A and not a situation where you have Plan A as X and Plan B as Y. This makes sense and Howe explained why this is the case.

I do however think we need to adjust our playing style to bring the best out of the unique skillset of Wally and building around that. If you look at the age of our squad, he represents the future unless there is a view that he is an interim fix that the club was pressured into due to the rats behavior. I doubt Howe likes interim fixes so Wally should be here for a while.

While I love the blood and thunder, in your face approach we had with the rat, that approach is not sustainable over a lengthy period of time and will only bring short term cup success and inconsistencies in a 38 game league season.

Hence the need to evolve into a more methodical, deliberate style that maintains possession interspersed with a high press when the situation dictates.

This may be our transitional season to that space and we certainly need another summer window to see a different type of player aiming to get the best out of Wally. Wissa is not the long term future, but he is adaptable to compliment a different style while he is here. The midfield and wide men is where the hard work lies.

ps: Have our midfield forgotten how to make late runs into the box? Looks like only BigJoe got the memo.

After our opening we didnt have control for a long period. Not that Burnley had any control either.

Onslaught is a bit over the top but they were the better team after they got there goal. We turned into Gerrard butler and his Spartans 😂 holding the mighty burnley at bay.
