bobbydazzla
We either need to be stealing emerging talent from under the noses of the mid to lower table teams in the same way the cartel clubs do to us. Or we need to wait until the cartel clubs have filled their shopping baskets and then go after the high ticket items that they didn’t buy, knowing that we’re unlikely to get gazumped. Both options carry risk, but it’s better than pissing about trying to pull worldies just for them to end up fobbing us off so they can sleep with Studley Goodfuck. maze
Sometimes in life you get to a point where you can’t get any further. I think Eddie’s time is up soon. I can’t see how we are making progress. A disaster of a transfer window last summer, no signings this window. He’s managed to get us through the rough times before, just can’t see it happening this season. Kimbo
Overall I’m very happy with the job he’s done at the club, but I don’t think he’s done a good job since the end of last season. Obviously we had a shocking summer window, and there was some sort of falling out with the last DoF. He has a family member on the transfer team which I wouldn’t allow, and I’m not sure if our new DoF is just going to be a yes man. So I’m not really happy with that area. It should be solved by the owners taking control and telling him he will be consulted but his control will be limited. On the pitch our tactics haven’t really developed into anything positive, it’s still based on athleticism and we’re poor with the ball. We’re predictable and not a technical or skilful team. I’m finding this disappointing and it looks like he has a limitation here. I also question whether he’s still getting a response from the players. A managers methods and messages get stale and players stop listening. Many managers have done great jobs at a club and there has come a point where both the club and manager need a change, I’m concerned we’re heading in that direction. I’m also not sure what the ambition of the owners really is for the club. If they’re happy with midtable then there’s really no point in getting unhappy about the job he’s done this season. If they wanted CL they would be making transfers happen this window. I’m split between seeing how the rest of the season goes and giving him another transfer window to change things. I suppose I’m on the fence then.

Based on where we aspire to be, he’s unproven. His ceiling may well be competing on 1 or 2 fronts and polishing average players to make them good. Problem is, how do we know when he’s definitely reached his ceiling, or if he’s just having a wobble on an otherwise upward trajectory. At some point a decision needs to be made on how far he can take us and does his capability match the ambition. Tricky to know when to stick or twist. That and you have to have something to move to that you really believe in and is available. Something you feel will take you farther. Eddie has been fantastic and he has a longer leash for me than some others here, but I get both sides.

To upgrade Eddie we need someone who has had proven success of managing across 4 x fronts and winning things consistently. How many managers have that and if they do, why are they coming here rather than a cartel club or a prestigious European side. These days we’re a fucking pushover. A piece of piss to score goals against and absolutely weak as piss at protecting points and winning positions. Where’s our bad ass street brawler attitude gone ? We’re soft as clarts. Why is it bamboozling though? It's obviously an energy issue

SAK
Voted, I appreciate what he’s done for us but think his time is up here but not advocating a mid season sacking. His brand of football, high pressure and turnovers up the pitch resulting in goals has a shelf life. We need to evolve into a possession team to mix it with the elite consistently and I don’t think he’s the guy to do that as it’s not his style. He has been hampered by DoF issues and limited budgets in comparison to top six teams but other teams with lesser budgets can give those teams a tough time. A lot of of our problems stem from the fact we can’t retain possession when pressurised, our passing in the final third is poor, we leave massive gaps between defence and midfield that the opposition operate in and are straight on to our defence. We can see this but he and his staff haven’t addressed it and I don’t have faith he can.

enthusiast
purely on the pitch, i'm on the fence: it's not clear to me what we're supposed to be transitioning into, and his (for want of a better word) stubbornness in not addressing things that are fairly obvious to the casual observer is frustrating. i think bobbydazzla's mention of his ceiling might have some truth to it, but he still has a lot of credit in the bank with me, and i'm more than open to the suggestion that eddie howe knows more about a running a football team than i do. otherwise i've a great deal of sympathy for the bloke (and i say that as someone who's probably took to him less than most here), and am fairly set in the belief that the owners have fucked him over by failing to have any stable or coherent structure above/around him. howe ends up unfairly carrying a lot of blame for a fairly disastrous transfer window when a well-run club would not have had him so close to the process, and as a result there's going to be less money available for the big rebuild required - even if just to tread water - at the end of this season. it's only going to get harder, and i really hope the club is actually getting it's shit together, so some of the pressure can be taken off howe so can concentrate on what he's good at. Heron
As always - I am struggling to see what has been within Howes remit that has been the root cause of our current "under performance". Everything for me points towards the back room and potential under performance of individuals within team. The latter which is obviously more to do with Howe. It feels like an endless cycle of regurgitating the same points this season - on both sides. I'm sure I'm doing folks tits in when we win too. All just seems knee jerk and without consideration for all the grey matter.

You do understand that this is not an argument in favour of Howe being a manager who should be at a club with ambitions of being in Europe consistently? As long as we’re out of the cups quickly and have no European football then everything will be tickety-boo?

Even if this season had/does go better we have so many aging players and players on shorter deals that we arent going to be able to just do minor tweaks to the squad. Added to those we would ideally want to keep but will go means more player turn over. Wholesale changes to the squad all in one go can always come with alot of risk added to Howe having a certain way he wants to play it could get worse before it gets better. The transition point is always an interesting one to think about for me. I accept that we're transitioning in terms of generally adapting to not having an ace in the pack at centre forward. In terms of style of play I'm not convinced we're deliberately trying to be more possession-based, for example, it's more that teams know how to set up against us and we're in a bit of a no man's land of most teams aren't giving us opportunities for transitions because they know we'll kill them but we don't quite have the quality that we're going to break teams down eventually or even just keep "boring" possession and wait for someone in the opposition to switch off.
