Nope. Today was enough for me, but our higher ups have shown absolutely nothing to suggest they're capable of hiring a better manager. Our sporting director is his mate and the CEO is someone who did marketing for Madrid and grew an MLS team ffs

The thought of Hopkinson drafting a shortlist and interviewing for the manager’s position sends my blood cold tbh.  I can imagine a Rosenoir-type corporate bullshit merchant doing well.

I don’t know if that specific shortlist is true or not and I’m not claiming inside knowledge. I’m just applying a bit of logical reasoning.

Based on Mitchell’s track record and his own public statements, it seems pretty unlikely he’d be pushing to overpay for a 30-year-old. His whole model has consistently been about identifying younger talent from abroad and building value that way.

So why not say that instead of framing speculative "logical reasoning" as a fact?

Just hurts so much more to think we won a cup and secured CL last season and hadn't signed a player for awhile so looked all set up to push on and grow with one of the best strikers in the world still with 3 years on his deal.

The behind the scenes bullshit with Mitchell/the owners, Isak throwing a grenade into our summer, has just set off a horrible spiral of events that have contributed to season.

We are now going into the summer with no trophy, no European football of any kind and possibly a bottom half finish. Thoroughly demoralised, fans and players all questioning the direction and trajectory of the club. Tonali, Tino, Gordon, Bruno, Hall may all be looking to jump off the train and get themselves a move like Isak now.

No doubts we will be on the backfoot this window with all the Isak money already wasted on the wrong players unfortunately and now needing a massive rebuild before we even factor losing some of our better players and how difficult it will be to replace like for like.

Howe for the first time really is losing the confidence of a number of fans it seems, which felt unthinkable 12 months ago. But there's just not enough things to cling to with positivity from this year to looking forward at the moment. Style of play as run stale, stats don't lie, unable to overcome losing positions and unable to hold on to winning ones. All the late goals conceded. Poor in-game subs and game management.

A big reset is needed and I hope he can be the one to help do it. Just wonder if this season will have drained him too much aswell.

No, it's looking at the past and saying he's had some success without a reasoned argument as to why.  Because if you have a real argument to why he's a good manager then why would you need to talk about "credit in the bank".

Eh? What he’s done before is evidence of being good isn’t it?

It’s not like the people who want him out have deep and reasoned tactical analysis behind them

If he was anyone else - Pardew, Allerdyce, Kinnear - he'd be out. Today and Barca were embarrassing. Time to move on.

Aye but they're all shite managers. He's had one shite season.

It’s such a raw one this that I’ll be honest and say I’m really not bothered if he was gone in the summer. He’s undoubtedly a club legend (and wouldn’t trade that cup win for anything), but everything about us is so stale, at times it’s painful to watch.

I’m sure I’ll be more measured in the days to come but there’s a part of me that’s longing for a sharp reactionary turn to have some kind of appraisement about where the club is going.

That’s 43 goals conceded this calendar year, but that’s totally normal

This surprised me, so I had a look and I think it's actually 45.

21 in the PL, third worst after Burnley and Tottenham, and 24 in the cups. We even leg Qarabag get three in two games.

We've scored fifth most in the league, but it doesn't mean much when you are so leaky.

If Eddie is finished, it should be for this inability to defend and control games. This is way more important than Elanga and WIssa not scoring goals.

The mackems got a lucky goal at their place and saw the game out. We are completely incapable of doing that.

A litany of hopeless set pieces and us conceding from another one does not inspire confidence either.

We have to hope and believe that the back-room stuff is sorted and ready to roll now. Otherwise it really doesn’t matter who the manager is, actually it could get worse given how technically limited most of our players are.

If we didn't spend all that money last summer would we have looked any worse than we currently do? Woltemade hasn't scored in what 20 games, Wissa can't get a game, Elanga looks terrible. Granted Thiaw has been good and Ramsey has showed signs. We could have saved £170m and looked exactly the same.

Wissa - imagine that the game is 1-1 in a derby and rather than your 50m #9, you turn to Osula. Damning.

Elanga's only use has really been to ensure that we didn't lose to Barca 7-0 tbh

The rest I could sort of live with if only that it gave us some depth.

Co-holding this opinion with wanting Howe out just seems like indulging in nihilism.

Our most successful manager in over half a century. Performing miracles in cup and Europe with a squad that should be where it is in the league.

Big season next season for the scouting and recruitment team.

We need a bit of a clear out of players either not good enough or who no longer see a future here. I’m still ok with Howe, he’s got a huge summer ahead. One thing that is doing my absolute napper in is the amount of goals we’re conceding just after HT; it’s like we put Prozac in the tea.

I don't want him gone because I know how good we can be under him but he has to cut the shit this summer. And the club needs to not be an operational mess either.

This has to be a ruthless move into our next phase. No pussyfooting about keeping good lads about for another year just because. Half of our leadership group now shouldn't be starters ffs some not even at the club [emoji38]

This is a man who is out of ideas, and when you look at his quotes over the last few weeks, it shows:

After the first derby loss: "We didn't reach the standards and level of performance that we would pride ourselves on. And the main thing, you just heard me say it many, many times over the years, is effort, commitment. You know, winning our individual duels, winning the battle on the pitch. You can do all those things and still lose, but you leave with a feeling that we left it all out on the pitch. That was one of a collection of small games, I think, this year where we've been disappointed with ourselves."

February 7: “There’s a harsh reality for me. I need to think long and hard about me. I need to work better and do more, work out solutions. I’m obviously not doing my job well enough. It’s a difficult moment for us, there’s no denying it. Today we have to take full accountability.”

February 28: “Certainly in relation to the Premier League, our form for a while has not been strong enough, it's not been good enough. We know that. We take responsibility for that. It’s been really frustrating for us and that is the perils of Europe, I’m afraid, where we’ve tried to be laser-focused on every game and give attention to every game with the same importance."

Today: "Very, very painful. Most of all painful for our supporters and they're the ones I think about now. I've got very little to use as an excuse. Once you haven't performed and you know how much the game means you have to accept the criticism. I'm disappointed in myself and my delivery over the last week."

That wasn’t just a home loss to Sunderland after being 1 nowt up.

It was the summary of our entire season in a TL:DR format for anyone who hasn’t seen every game we’ve played.

We’ve defended like shite and dropped points from winning positions since August.

It’s the same shit week after week after week. And that’s on the manager. He picks the team and decides the tactics and is tasked with ensuring the players know how to control games when we get a foothold.

We’re making the same mistakes again and again and again and Howe doesn’t seem to be able to stop it. Which is his job.

Yeah, you’re not wrong.  Probably a good reason not to act in a radged-up state.  The club is where it has been for most of my life - mismanaged and uncared for by its owners.

This is what pisses me off the most, and my biggest criticism of Howe. We've blew £170m on players who brought pretty much nothing to the squad, and two of which are arguably worse than who they were supposed to replace i.e. Elanga for Murphy, Wissa for Wilson. Woltemade doesn't suite the PL whatsover either. It's tragically bad.

For anyone wanting him out, and I’m on the fence, the biggest question is, would you trust those running the club to act of a timely manner and get an upgrade in ?

The two managers we targeted after sacking Bruce were Emery and Howe. Both have been very successful since, although the leadership at the top tier has changed since then so no idea how we would go about it now. I have no idea how much football knowledge we have in the boardroom tbh.

I honestly think resignation over further back-room issues is the only way he won’t be manager next season. If that’s sorted then I would expect a better summer and a decent season.

Sacking him would be pointless anyway unless the recruitment and executive people are completely ready to supply a new manager with better players. Otherwise it’s more likely they would do worse than Howe.

I’ve no doubt if Howe stays next season we will end up in the European places and some decent cup runs. However, the following season we’ll have a shite league campaign, again, ending up out of Europe and starting yet another rebuild.

Might be a good enough existence for some but is nowhere near the stated ambitions of the club or what we could/should be capable of.

He’s not shite, he’s not a bad person, he’s achieved a hell of a lot more than I ever expected to see as a Newcastle supporter. However, he has a ceiling and we’ll either need to bump our head on it every other season or decide we need to move house.

I can see arguments for replacing him. People act like he's some shite, one note passion merchant every time he has a bad run though. This season's been bad and he takes the blame, but the lack of respect towards him is just shite to see (not from you).

I couldn't give a toss how "we react" in the next game. The season can end today, as far as I'm concerned.

TBF I’m sure Howe knows that, it’s just that the replacements have been worse and/or injured.

I don’t think Sunderland played well either TBH, they looked crap.

A limited team successfully playing to their strengths and getting results. Can't object to the way they went about it given the relative lack of quality.

The subs today is ridiculous. I mean it does look like he is out of ideas and just praying Osula and Wissa to make something happen
