The more time passes the more I lean towards backing him. Everyone, including him, knows this season has been unacceptable, even despite the obvious mitigating circumstances (Europe, Isak saga, signing 2 dud strikers, dogshit RW etc). Bin off that cunt nephew of his, Wissa, Tonali*, Nick and Tino*, and then hope to rebuild in the summer.

*The only players of any value that are easy to upgrade.

I was driving home earlier and had the same thoughts - surely even Howe is fucking annoyed at how shit this season has been.

Can I see him adapting enough to improve things? I wish I could but I just don’t.

This is my main worry. Needs to grow a pair and sign a DM.

you could tell in his post match interview he looked close to tears, How many managers have we had like that keegan/ Sir bobby? in my era that's hard to replace. I'll stick to my guns and say if we lose Eddie to our rivals i'm done with football its unfair as it is, I hope @Heron can get that flag ready for one of our home games

Howe has proven before he can completely change our style of play over the summer. I think he will look to do so again this one coming, it doesn't need to be drastic either.

Miley wasn't just thrown into the team, he was deemed to be ready to be part of the first team squad, he was training with the first team from a very young age

The number of minutes he got was undoubtedly accelerated due to the injury crisis but he had made his debut at the end of the previous season

Playing Miley over Shahar was clearly the right choice considering how well he played but some people are so far down wanting Howe out that they are resorting to some absurdities to criticise him, which is baffling as there are valid questions/criticisms to be had

Miley is a special talent, no getting away from that but he'd been in match day squads for half a season and played 14 mins in the final game of the season.

One EFL start and 9 mins off the bench in the champions league before he was thrown into the first team as a regular starter.

I've no idea on how good Shahar is or will be but he's there or thereabouts the same first team match day squad experience as Miley was and is supposedly highly rated.

We of course can't go back however playing Miley at right back worked but left the midfield light, we may, or of course may not, have been better off with Miley in the middle and Shahar given a shot.

This season at the same stage is identical in points to Ruud Gullit's. That wasn't considered a good season even though we got to a cup final, improved at this stage and by the end on the previous year and with a mess inherited from the previous manager. Standards should be a lot higher than that now.

But that proves the point about expectations. The great years under Keegan raised expectations that made the Dalglish and Gullit years seem worse. It is the same principle.

And at  that time we were financially better off in a comparative sense. Probably still in the top ten rich list and with no great gaps between the teams.

I would say our standards are higher than they were then but that does not mean matches like Sunday will not happen. There were bad games under Keegan too.

Nobody wants to lose to Sunderland, but we are making ourselves look “small time” by reacting so strongly. There were plenty of comments on this forum ridiculing Sunderland fans for the importance they were placing on this match (“their Cup Final”), but then people reacting as if we had just lost one.

Booing on Sunday was fair game imo. I don't think it should be a regular thing because overall we've been mint and I don't think the manager or players merit it, but no issues letting them know they weren't happy about it for that on Sunday.

Absolutely, everyone there is entitled to do what they want within the law and the rules of the ground.

However, I don’t think it will encourage players to stay at the club and may well put others off from joining.

Aye, I've got no issues with folks expressing their discontent on Sunday, but I just find the idea of booing very childish. Boo yourself in the mirror and you'll see what I mean

Any player put off by fans being unhappy at a shambolic display in a derby game (again) aren’t welcome. Soft cocks.

Don't think I've ever booed unironically at a game before however they deserved it on Sunday. Should have been launching grenades and molotovs if we were a real club iyam

Takes one to know one eh? Stop getting personal about someone else’s reaction to another spineless, embarrassing performance to our nearest and dearest.

No matter how much any of us try to play it down, beating Sunderland is always top (or very near) the priority list when the fixture list comes out.

We’ve not beaten them in the league since Ryan Taylor and not on Tyneside since that 5-1. Yes, they’ve not been in the league for a long spell but there’s been 6 home leagues games against since that and 5 away. We’ve not won any of them. Obvious this group weren’t here for the vast majority of them but let’s not pretend it’s anything but an absolute farce.

Add in the fact that we’ve recently won a trophy, had two spells in the Champions League and have spent an absolute fortune in comparison to them in their absence.

Finally, there was the complete non-performance at their place in December.

They owed us a result and at the very least a decent performance and we got neither. There was only one team winning that second half and it wasn’t us. In fact it was a carbon copy of so many games this season I’ve lost count.

It was always going to be the tipping point for many. It may be small time to think that way but it’s always the case when it comes to derby games. The reaction would have been entirely different if it was Brighton, I can assure you that.

People are rightly pissed off -  I’m still fuming now tbh, as you can probably tell

Had to go back and check and this is just not true

Miley played Right Back against Fulham, the midfield that day was Bruno, Ramsey and Willock and we had Sandro and Joelinton on the bench, how is that light?

Eddie playing a key role in the summer rebuild. Some heads in here are going to explode.

Read the similar Douglas article in the I. Sounds very positive overall, concerns but honest conversations from everyone and a plan to move forward. Liking the sound of it.

I'm going in the other direction, I'm now 70/30 to get rid. Wouldn't surprise me if he resigns end of May. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but the article today in the i, can't see him liking those conditions and that may force him to leave. He'll not want to lose that level of control but he has to accept that the DOF is his immediate boss and will set the clubs on field strategy, including around player trading and recruitment.

My biggest criticism of Howe, and this is being exposed nearly every game especially on Sunday, is his inability to make in game tweaks and changes. We often take the lead, but the opposition know that we'll play at least 80 minutes with 433 and a massive gap between defence and midfield. All they need to do is sit in and not be two goals begin by 60 minutes and they'll get a draw or win. Must have happened 10-15 times this season, what's the definition of insanity again! The mackems tweaked their midfield after 30 mins or so and helped them win the game. In his own words we dont need a Plan B. Its just do Plan A better. We must be the easiest team in the PL to set up against.

One of KKs biggest assets was how ruthless he was at selling players. Cole when top scorer, Kelly was top scorer and scored a hat trick then was sold before playing another game, even Quinn when he was scoring. Howe needs to forced to move on the deadwood as a full rebuild is needed. History suggests he'll not be receptive to this. Off the top of my head we need to shift.

Pope, and dont sign Ramsdale.

Tripper.

Burn or Schar, can't keep both.

Tino, wants the move so let him go.

Willock.

Tonali, seems to want away so take the cash.

Joelinton, last chance of a big fee.

Murphy, see above.

Barnes, see above. But keep him if Gordon pushes to leave.

Woltemade, unless we replace Howe with a manager who has a clue how to use him.

Fuck knows what we need to do with Elanga and Wissa. I'm relying on Wilaon to do some magic and for Howe to be told to go along with it.

I'm being a real harsh bastard here, but something has to give. The players are no longer responding to Howe and his team. He's not lost the dressing room or any bullshit like that but he seems unable to motivate them for so many games, and he's pretty much acknowledged this himself. Which is why I think he may resign. Five years is a long time to be at one club without changing your coaching team or reinventing your style of play. Its all gone stale, something has to give and change.
