Don't necessarily have an issue with people questioning this season as a whole, its been a mess and totally unacceptable in the league but when people say stupid stuff like "oh he lost to Sunderland twice he has to go" it makes you laugh. As if everything Eddie has achieved here should come down to a couple of defeats to Sunderland, we laugh at them for being small time but the way people have gone on since we lost that games makes us just as bad.

Daft comments in public, making a story out of nothing.

If I were Howe, I'd be thinking privately - alright then, give me that new training ground and match your own words with actions. Whilst also trying to focus on the next game instead of thinking about what you'll be asked at the press conference beforehand because of this.

Maybe he was trying to say we'll focus on the rest of the season before re-evaluating, which is fine. But he's a bit cloth eared if he doesn't realise these sort of statements will just be spun unnecessarily and create pointless noise.

Couldn't agree more. The logic is seriously lacking like.

To hate Sunderland, look down on them as beneath us (which they should be), laugh at them for defining themselves by their opposition to us, for measuring their success based on whether they beat us, etc etc, but then hand them the power of having played a part in ousting the most successful manager in most of our lifetimes. The irony would be overwhelming.

Yeah, pretty worried by those comments if that's how he goes about his business. Up to now the jury has been out on how he runs a football club, and I've been non-plussed by all his soundbites so far; I wasn't arsed about his 2030 comments - they were just fluff and not worth reading into. But to publicly make comments directly about the manager's position is something which actively impacts the day-to-day and seems incredibly reckless.

If he's really applying a make-or-break situation to the final seven games of the season then it's a massive red flag. That's a short-termist approach to managing a club when you should be looking at everything in the round. Don't even get me started on the notion of making any judgement based on losing to the mackems.

Hopefully he's just felt the need to pander to those in the fanbase who (tinhat) apply too great a meaning to the derby results, and the reality is that any decision on the manager's future is based on the full context. Brentford, Everton, Sunderland - in terms of revenues every defeat is equal. Hopefully he stays in that lane.

The crack about losing the derby “hurting” is absolutely a pandering to the fanbase. Hopkinson has been absolutely desperate to look like he “gets it” from the first week when he was photographed in a replica kit watching the match in New York

The Sunderland results would have absolutely no baring on whether I'd say this season has been a success or not.

Lose to them twice but finish 5th = success

Beat them twice and finish 11th = not a success

Luke Edwards has been saying for months, even since the Isak debacle, that the aim is to qualify for Europe. Like him or not, he's got a source or sources very well placed, so these comments from Hopkinson don't really surprise me at all.

I think the whole article is, tbf. It's why he stops short of unequivocally backing Howe after such an emotional result and bad run. Appeasing different camps.

Tbf if you live/work/go to school in the NE then a defeat to Sunderland is far different to a defeat to Everton or Brentford. To downplay it as being exactly the same as a game against them is probably why we tend to get our arses handed to us when we play them. Yes revenue wise it amounts to the same but for the supporters it's anything but, and that should apply to Howe and the players as well.

What if Eddie lost 5 of 7 to go? Or what if he won 5 of them? Wouldn’t most question or back him based on that? What if he lost all 7?

Did Hop give a different interview to the wider media? The video from the club doesn't include any Howe stuff.

Of course it doesn't, that would be insane [emoji38]

As I've said I think he needs to win 5. Any less and I think he'd be on thin ice. If he lost all 7 (can't see it like) that would mean ending the season with 9 defeats on the spin and he could have no complaints if he lost his job.

I think to not acknowledge the derby defeat(s) would have been a worse look personally. It's a really emotive sport and we didn't turn up in either game, to just pretend that everything is fine and it's like any other week doesn't really land imo.

I mean...

The revenue argument is all Hopkinson needs to concern himself with.

I wouldn't necessarily blame any fan for wanting a change of manager after ending up on the wrong side of a derby double, but I wouldn't expect the CEO to have the same lens.

Yeah, that's obviously why he said it. I just hope it's not factoring too much into the actual decisions about Howe.

Sounded to me like he was wary to back Howe 100% when he knows the fans are annoyed.

Exactly. I love Eddie and have been one of his biggest supporters on here, and that is sort of the lens I’m looking at those comments.

Do I like them? Fuck no. Honestly really weird for the media to even ask that on the back of the accounts stuff.

However how this team performs in the final 7 can either get us into Europe or not and that matters to the club. If he lost or drew the majority of the remaining I can see more wanting him out.

I have to say I really don't like this Hopkinson guy, screams of a MBA data twat rather than someone who actually understands football heritage. Then again he's a Canadian, who's been tasked to grow a club in the North East and to compete so I'm not surprised I just hear LinkedIn buzzwords every single interview he does.

Yuck to Canucks am I right? We should ban the Canadians here in response.

Should have his arse kicked right up his back for that “for now” insult.  Disgusting comment that shows we’ve made yet another suboptimal appointment.

I think I'm too North American despite my obvious Geordie roots, I've been away from home too long, like. There's nowt wrong with those quotes imo. Ultimately he's saying that no one is safe, and complacency is not pat of the plan. Anyone can get it if they got it coming, so don't got it coming and you'll be fine.

Which is...ok? I think?

As fans the hope is that the hierarchy will be as romantic as we are but the reality, especially in the modern game is that many of them simply do not give a fuck about football and only care about growth. He's bridged the divide between his natural disposition of being an excel sheet automaton and understanding the power of the fanbase and their wants. Something he surely learned while at the Knicks. He most likely understands how this has mostly been lightning in a bottle and will not disturb that unless it's far beyond point of no return.

I hate the 'I'm too hip to be bothered about the derby' crowd. Complete lies, plastic fans or absolute goons.

Might seem a silly question but what kind of results are you expecting from him?

He has to grow our revenues so we can compete with the big boys. I don't expect it to happen overnight, but that's his job right?
