I think that’s really good PR by Hopkins. If he blindly goes in favour of Howe it upsets a section unhappy with this season. If the message is different it detracts from the remainder of the season.

I don’t think changing managers is in our plans but I don’t think it hurts to be a bit ambiguous too.

It's a bit clumsy but it's only destructive if the only path forward you see is 100% Eddie in. I'm on the fence and i'm not really concerned by what he said - if he says unequivocally that Eddie is our man and then sacks him, he gets called out for being a disingenuous prick. He clearly thinks we've underperformed, as many of us do. I imagine if we scrape Europe in the last 7 games he'll get a reprieve. If not, it's probably more like an inquest and an uncomfortable conversation.

How's giving my opinion gatekeeping? Should I keep quiet so others don't get offended? Seems like the opposite opinion is very much allowed on here by that metric.

Having your opinion by belittling others is exactly that.

"People tearing down their live, laugh, love signs" is what exactly? It's degrading someone into a category usually associated with  common, uneducated, or tacky - all because they think differently to you. Please let me know what you'd call that. If it's not gate keeping or gaslighting, your intent is there and it's clear you think you are better than those people and they shouldn't think like that.

Meh, there's a difference between not being bother about losing the derby and thinking it isn't a result that should determine the future of a manager.

This.

I'm not even British but do I care about the derby? Yes, I do, because I've been a fan for 20+ years and it's a big part of this football club. There are certain things that are important for this particular club, that's a big part of being a supporter. Do I think the derbies should determine the future of the manager? Fuck no.

Local identity and historic rivalries, just a couple more things sacrified on the altar of modern football.

To be fair just because the derby was mentioned I would hope and expect those results alone didn't determine his future, but also let's not pretend that the derbies would be the only reason, there's a fair bit to choose from coming from last summer to now to suggest he may no longer be the man to take us forward.

Dickarus is one of the worst posters on here for doing that. And you are right, it's absolutely rife on here.

It wasn't one of those lucky cup wins though. We've been building up to that since Eddie arrived. That win was a result of his development of the squad since the day he arrived.

This has been an iffy season (for reasons long discussed) but the previous three seasons should tell us all that we shouldn't be rash in deciding what to do in the summer.

I know, i was just being a dick. But you know the way these conversations go on here. We have been a very good cup team since Eddie arrived and that's something to be proud of, and grateful for.

Some extremely short memories on here. One difficult season, which hasn't even finished, and folk are ready to sack the man that fucking got us in to this position of cup wins, cup finals, CL football etc.

I completely understand that questions need asked about certain things, and understand people's concerns, but come on, he deserves a chance to rectify things, surely?

Worth noting that quite a few clubs likely to be looking for new managers in the summer as well. Certainly wouldn’t hold out much hope for those in charge to act decisively and get the appointment right.

Absolutely, however that's modern football.  And, as I've said before some of our fans are turning into the entitled shite that follow the scummy six. They expect success, despite the fact we have rules intended to stop us challenging. Now, the downfall is, and i say this as a massive Eddie fan. The team and he, have given the entitled idiots, and a lot of fair minded, and big Eddie fans a lot to be worried about, and to criticise.

He does deserve next season, any other point of view is mental imo. If he doesn't evolve and the team continues as it has at times this season, then he will be gone.

The thing i tell myself, Oh, 5 to 10 years ago.   If you said, you'll make the semi-final of the League Cup, qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League, make the 5th round of the FA Cup, and with a good run make a decent fist of finishing in the top 10. And, if you told me that was a poor season and the manager should be sacked, i would have kicked you in the bollocks and told you to stop being a toss rocket.

Times have a changed somewhat.

That doesn't scream Howe will definitely be our manager next season like.

And why should it? It's not his job to keep Howe happy, he's his boss, not a fan.

I'm not a fan of it being made public mind, even if he's not said anything that terrible in reality. It can easily be seen as a lack of confidence, when really it's just him saying we'll see how the land lies at the end of the season, which is perfectly reasonable.

Disclosure, I'm Eddie IN.

But on one hand it's nice to see Eddie answers to someone. Feels like he's been his own boss for a few seasons now. This is what we all wanted with the board level positions being filled.

On the other hand, wish it wasn't being demonstrated in this way.

You just kicked him off the forum not so long ago.

Because I called for the death of all Canadians and requested their flag to be burned pre match? Is he really that fucking sensitive?

Why should it? Because Howe deserves to still be manager next season, and the club might have wanted to avoid the tidal wave of whispers, tittle tattle and speculation which will be triggered by not making that clear.

We might be looking at this from the wrong angle..Maybe its Eddie who decided at this lunch with Hopkinson that he has had enough..He may want to move down South with his family. He may want a break from management..He also did this in 2020

He had pneumonia 12 months ago..Cut his summer holidays short when Mitchell left ..Who knows

He hasn't said Howe won't be manager either though has he? He's obviously been asked a question and he's said they'll sit down and make an assessment at the end of the season. I think Howe is a big boy and isn't so sensitive to let newspaper tittle tattle affect his job. If he doesn't feel supported by those above him, he won't need sacking, he'll walk anyway.

I hope he is both here next year and some serious questions are asked as soon as this season is over.

Hopefully now there is a DOF and CEO in place we may be run a bit more professionally. I thought the wheelie bin era was over but it's very much still alive

Out of interest, why don't you think he can adapt?

Honest question from a somewhat new NUFC supporter and "soccer" dilettante. Has Eddie run the same 4-3-3 his entire time here? Was it the same at Bournemouth? It seems a scrappy formation intended to counter teams who are technically superior and more talented. Is that the case? And if it is, could his devotion to the 4-3-3 be a hindrance to us signing some of the better technical players?

Well, I guess that's more than one question, but they're all honest, so please don't rip my head off.

It's not just losing to Sunderland though is it? I'm sure you'd see way more reasoned takes if we were 5th/6th and lost bottled both derbies.

We've been poor all season. Sunderland was just another spineless defeat in a season full of them really.

Everything else constant, there would not have been near the level of reaction had we lost to any other mid-table club (which we have done several times this season.)

The massive reaction was not because we’ve had a mid season, it was because we lost the derby.
