I think the whole premise of us improving thanks to the relaxed schedule was undermined by the defeat at Palace. I don't think any reasonable spectator would've expected us to suddenly be mint after the international break; we just needed to get the mini-season off to a good start. Instead we capitulated yet again and - if the following Bournemouth performance was anything to go by - the players had lost belief in us achieving anything this season. Against that context I think it was probably wishful thinking to assume things were ever going to get much better. Brighton/Forest/West Ham was pretty good but just far too little, too late.

I was hopeful that things would change in the run-in too, and I think the theory was pretty valid given how farcical the schedule was prior to the break. But it hinged on us starting well but we started horribly.

That Palace game was the most annoyed I've been with us all season, including the derbies. Just couldn't believe how listless we looked in the first half against a team that clearly couldn't give a shite, the game felt like a pre-season friendly when it should have been an opportunity to have a good crack at the end of the campaign.

Possibly, but then when you hear that Burn was more interested in the West Ham score, it’s not a good look.

What's this about? I missed that one

The most puzzling thing is why people seem so bothered about Howe? It is genuinely baffling. He’s a multi millionaire who’s had a great run but I just cannot work out for the life of me why people are so steadfastly defiant about whether he should stay.

You can't possibly think of a reason or two why some would want him to stay?

I agree with this. It was the Palace game where I had a proper wobble. Yesterday was ridiculous. Glad the season is over.

Why do you keep asking this question when the answer is really straightforward?

He's improved nigh on every player whose played under him, in many cases with international call ups as a result, and together they've won a trophy and qualified for, and played in the Champions League twice.

Before this season you're right but he's improved none of last summer's signings.

Reading The Athletic write up and this stuck out:

In January, Howe had pushed to sign Rayan, the young Brazilian forward, but the club demurred and instead the player left Vasco da Gama for Bournemouth. It meant another window closed with Newcastle failing to upgrade their team.

Surely there was a way we could have offloaded a fringe player like Willock to

make this work?

George Caulkin. What surprise.

Me too. More angry than even the derby, tbh.

Also the only point, in his tenure, when I've really despaired of Eddie. I posted about it BUT when Mateta, Sarr and Wharton stood on the touchline and all he did was change our LW my heed burst :suicide:

I didn't watch the game yesterday, I was at the cricket with a Sunderland fan, painful.

I've written at length why I'm content with Howe to lead the summer rebuild, but it's a tough call and I wouldn't begrudge anyone for wanting to move on.

I think my biggest concern is the revelation he was going to walk after Brentford, but he was talked out of it. If he's going to lead the rebuild and get players to buy in, he truly has to believe he can turn our fortunes around.

Fair point, I can't help thinking another rebuild with a new manager might leave us with another stale season until he works out what players should stay or go, at least Howe has a head start in that department

It's genuinely baffling to you that some people happen to like other people?

If that’s true you’d think Howe might have been a tad pissed off at Hopkinson stating we had money to spend in January when we didn’t make any moves…

Perhaps the club were reluctant to back him at that point given the way the season was going? Either way, missing out on Rayan when we’ve had to witness total dross on our right hand side is quite the shame.

IF it's true ( and given Caulkin is more of a fan than a journalist these days I have my doubts ) then it would have been Ross Wilson who made the call. Either he didn't rate him that highly, or just felt we had too many forwards on our books already.

When he’s demonstrated so comprehensively that he’s a very capable, likeable and dignified bloke, it’s not hard to see why people would want him to turn things around. It’s harder, imho, to think the opposite.

Every part of me wants to see Eddie Howe succeed here again. Because, if he does, everyone wins.

Something has hit the players. Half don't want to be here and the other half cba. Even Bruno fucked the game off yesterday. If Howe had to talked out of leaving, it makes sense why we've dropped off a cliff.

For me if he stays, he doesn't see out the year so I'd rather see us move on quickly this summer when decent managers are available rather than be forced into hiring later in the year.

I could certainly see how Wilson would be uncomfortable with further major investment on our right side without first fixing the fuck ups of last summer. Just a shame that’s all.

There is clearly a fuck tonne of issues behind the scenes imho. If Howe stays, he needs to clear out the non-committed, the non-believers and the non-capables. Big job. That’s probably about 10 players. He’s then got to sell the dream to their replacements and bond them all together in a new look team ready to attack the season.

Howe was never going to walk. He probably had a little emo moment in the post-match sit-down after Brentford, but I doubt he offered to resign.

Sums up nicely how I feel too tbh. There’s nobody else who I’d want to represent us as manager and he’s by far the best manager of my lifetime. I’m absolutely desperate for him to turn it round and be here for a decade +.

I don’t think he will though, and it pains me to say that. I actually don’t think he will see out 26/27.

I think the opposite a new manager could get the project moving again.

This is a window of opportunity to get a good manager, come October the landscape won’t look as appealing.

its the end of a natural cycle.

same coaches, same message, same players.

happens to the best of them... wenger, clough etc.

even ranieri was sacked after winning the prem..

only fergie lasted long. he wasnt a coach himself but he made sure the coaches he did have were changed regularly.

time to break it up and inject a little jeopardy into the situation.

club needs reawakening.

ruthlessness, rather than sentiment.

i'm not even sold on Ross.

whats on his CV that makes him a catch?

and his relationship with Eddie seems too cosy.

Eddie needs challenging if he is staying.

Some kindly demonstrating my point! It’s weird how invested some seem to be in a guy who has contributed to an awful season, who has been instrumental in building a fairly uninspiring squad, and who honestly seems to be just a bit beige.

Surely it’s enjoyment of Newcastle and our football ahead of everything  else? The season has been absolutely turgid and it’s hard to see how its not mostly on the manager, no?
