Newcastle United 0 - 4 Manchester City (19/12/2021)

We werent trying to win ugly under bruce that was front foot football! lolol. Solidifying the defence had to be the number 1 priority and Howe hasn't managed it. I have sympathy and it is Man City. It's just the silly mistakes that get me.

I get your point but I disagree, I think you can play horrific football and get some points. It’s not nice to watch but it can work.

Doesn't really improve us though, does it? We need the right players to fit into Howe's system, these lot are clearly past their sell date.

We showed glimpses of decent play in this match, have to think he's evaluating who is up for it and who needs to go in order to improve the club beyond January as well as long term.

I'm not sure there were really any credible alternatives. The mistake was Bruce should have been sacked immediately and Howe brought in as quickly as possible. I think he's a reasonable choice in an impossible position, but I am worried about what he is doing to address our defense.

He can't do anything to address it until January.

Solidify the defence.  How exactly, are two left backs are injured.  Our centre backs have no pace and our right backs awful as well.  So how can you solidify that.  Oh protect them with a midfield.  Our centre midfield is so poor, our best player wont track back, our only striker is injury prone and our right wingers are well, poor.  Solidify the defense, how?????  By replacing all in Jan, if we can

When you watch the full match there isn't really anything positive, we've not played well and Man City hardly got out of first gear. When they picked up the pace we were done for and resulted in that final goal. You don't expect to win these games, but the performance is hardly inspiring as we've got too many passengers. Realistically we're hardly missing any players through injury that you would class as a game changer - I'm not blaming Howe as it is still early days, but this month has been painful.

Another (expected) pasting, coupled with some more shambolic defending.  72 goals conceded this calendar year (A PL record)

A real losers mentality has been allowed to take root and fester at this club  - the playing side needs gutting and starting again, regardless of whether we stay up or not. Lascelles and Clark - not even championship standard.

Yup, when you have a previous owner who couldn't be bothered, that makes its way to the coaching staff and onto the pitch. We were unbelievably lucky the last 2 seasons under Bruce to the point that it's infected any sort of progress with a manager who knows what he's doing.

I just think you sometimes have to abandon principles. You can set up and play ugly but it’s still good tactically if you get what I mean.

I get ya. I suppose Howe is stubborn in his desire to play in a certain style/structure. Which I think is probably best for our overall improvement, sad thing is playing actual football is beyond our current squad.

You sit in a really low defensive block, drill the players into ceding possession but staying in very compact and organized ways. Rafa had these CBS.

That was 2-3 years ago.  They've got older, slower.  May as well sign Shearer, he scored 20 a season, years ago.  Get Ginola as well

On the match itself, positives to take, we did try and play a bit after going 1 down to THAT goal.. even after the second with more calamitous defending, we still had chances.

The lack of a penalty decision seemed to take all the stuffing out of us though..

Joelinton was great, actually stick some competent midfielders around him and that’s his position from now on.

I’m struggling to pick any more though, the rest of the team were dogshit. Just transfer list everyone apart from Wilson, ASM, Almiron, Fede & Joelinton

Aye but there’s levels to it. Rafa did it a lot and it worked a lot. With worse squads

Id say the defenders then was better - younger and less injuries than they’ve got now. Same goes with most of the squad still playing - all were younger and better form. Jamaal was faster, did the simple stuff right. Clark was effective. Schar was shit hot. Lejeune was next level. Fede solid. Hayden was decent. Diame was awesome at the end. Merino was class. Longstaff was coming on.

winning the Rafa way worked out with them because Rafa made these decent players better as a whole. But what I’m saying is these same players are really just not good anymore.

Having looked at it again, their second goal was not a worldie. The attacker was able to advance all the way to the centre and edge of the penalty area, and set himself perfectly before shooting. Loads of players would have scored from that position.

A proper DM - and Hayden is not one - would have kept in a position to block that. And our central defenders lack confidence and don't impose themselves.

I used to think, on balance, that the better strategy with our squad was to just get men behind the ball and hope for the best. However, I can see that Howe is at least laying the foundations of a more positive approach, and if we can get some better players in come January, at least they'll be coming in to system that's designed to pick up wins, which we're going to need.

In those positions, DM and centre back, we won't need to break the bank to at least make some improvements.

Anyone else see the poor fella flat on his back with his shirt off outside the club shop near the Strawberry, with a load of paramedics doing chest compressions on him? Didn't look good at all ?

Even given he ghosted past the two midfielders too easily, the worst part of that goal was the two defenders turning their backs on the shot instead of diving in to get the blocks in. He took an extra touch, a genuine defender never lets the shot get off cleanly once he's took that.

All of our central defenders are scared of making a mistake, and end up in no-man's land. We've got a group of Steven Taylors.

What annoys me is our players won’t even just foul if they have to. If willock is taking himself out the game that way he has to take their player with him

Was our weakest link today

A catalogue of individual errors for the first: Dubravka giving away the corner, Clark not taking responsibility, Dubravka not communicating and/or taking charge.

Second goal, thoughtless from Willock, poor luck with the slip, didn't close it down quick enough, top quality finish. Not too dissimilar from the Liverpool third.

Absolute stone wall penalty not given which gives us a route back into the game.

Matched them first half aside from daft mistakes.

Don't really blame Howe for having a slight go by bringing ASM on, don't think it effected the result negatively to be honest. May have snatched something back.

Joelinton MotM again for us, for me.

Overall the game was won on decision making. Poor decision making from our team, poor decision making from the referee, and almost flawless decision making from Man City.

They'll win the league.

Was well proud at the end seeing the Gallowgate rallying though. Exactly what's needed right now.

You would think most of these players would give it their absolute all given the current changes happening at the club. Instead we are seeing absolute tepid performances all across the board. To these players I say: Get the fuck out.

These games under Eddie so far have been just as infuriating as the last ones under Bruce. Not Howe's fault that these lot can't be arsed to put in a performance.

They are just shite, I said a long time ago one of the biggest problems we have is that almost all bar one or two know they will be gone at the end of the season (or should be) they have nothing to run through brick walls for now.
