Good point, I forgot that the English press is renown for their restraint, understated headlines, and that English pundits are notorious for their appreciation of foreign players and foreign leagues.

Don’t worry, we hate the English press too.

We can all agree that Fabian Schar is pretty canny, aye?

Botman v Schar last season

/ played the exact number of games

/ Botman's passing stats blow wor Fab's out the water: 89.1% completion compared to 71.2%. Specifically long passes, it's 77.7% to Fab's 51.3%.

/ the vast, vast majority of Botman's passes are on the ground. Fab's is significantly more split, with far more high passes.

/ Botman attempted and won more tackles, attempted and won more presses and made more blocks. Schar made more interceptions and is better at challenging against dribbles, though.

/ Botman scored more goals (3-2), made far fewer fouls (19-33) and won far more aerial duels (73%-51%).

/ Fab beats Bots on dribbles; 61% compared to 50%, and has more touches further forward

/ they both got booked four times.

As alluded to by @Milanista, we're going down the data-driven route like RB Leipzig, Liverpool and one or two others, rather than the flash-the-cash PSG/Chelsea route. I think it's great, this guy, rumoured lack of pace aside, could be a mainstay of our backline for a decade.

Wasn’t one of our first signings one of Liverpool’s data gadgies?

Think you're right, Mark Leyland might be his name?

Edit - googled it and his name is indeed Mark Leyland, no idea where I plucked that from like

TBH I quite like him now, he’s growing into the role

Absolutely, there’s no real value in what he puts out, but you have to admire the lad.

Here's a comparison with Aguerd, Kimpembe and Badiashile - similar (top) ball playing defenders from Ligue 1 - plus Schar and Burn for the last two seasons. Of course it's not a very valid comparison with our CBs as it's a different league..

Botman seems an aggressive "fighter" CB who excels in duels - he's leading the tackling, heading and blocking stats but also has very decent passing and ball carrying stats. He's not as elegant on the eye as the other 3 players, but he seems remarkably composed with the ball at his feet for his physique.. and age - at 22 years, £30 million seems like a decent deal for a player of that calibre.

Christ, the defenders Milan had from the late ‘80s to late ‘90s (and on tbf).

Tassotti, Baresi, Costacurta, Maldini is surely the greatest back line in football history - Tassotti and Costacurta were superb players, and Baresi and Maldini will always be in ‘greatest defenders ever’ conversations.  To think they had the likes of Panucci and Galli as back-ups in the side that won the 1994 European Cup - Jesus wept.  I can’t separate them from Barcelona’s late ‘00s-early ‘10s side as the greatest club teams in history.

Incredible side. Always loved Savicevic in that 94 team. They ran Barcelona ragged in the EC Final. Hard to believe thinking back that a bit earlier they also had Rikaard, Gullit and Van Basten as well. Christ almighty.

They then followed that up with Cafe-Nesta-Stam-Maldini. Obscebe.

Canny (an alternative understated appreciation!).
Loved the number of right footed tackles shown and the through balls. Not sure about the long passes being  a weakness; doubt comes not from the clips but from the comparisons with Schar’s stats earlier.

Now to release the Woodgate clone from cryo-storage and we're done at the back.

The clone was released on Wednesday but is already injured apparently, they should have edited that gene.
