Worst case scenario would be the Saudis giving Liverpool a fat stack of cash for VVD, and then Liverpool using a portion of that to take Sven from us. They'd get our best defender and still have healthy change leftover from the sale of VVD to Saudi.

 

Such a scenario might just make me give up with the whole charade once and for all.

 

It already kind of happened with Nunez going to Saudi and then Isak going to Liverpool, but this would be far worse imo.

Like him much as he is a classy composed solid CB but we might have to cash in in January if we can't tie him down with a new contract. Come next summer he will only have 12 months left so even harder to demand a big fee

If he’s not going to sign a new deal we basically have no choice but to sell him in January and reinvest. We also have three other quality starters at that position so it’s not going to be like the Isak situation where we have to overpay to replace immediately.

FWIW there’s no reason to think Botman is unhappy about how he’s been managed recently. He’s had serious injuries, he’s now back and playing brilliantly. 
 

I don’t think football now works on the basis of ‘play me 90mins every game or I’m pissed off’. Not for anyone with a brain.

I can understand the club in this situation - he could barely play 2 games back to back without having another setback and on top of that no guarantee he would able to play the level he was prior. I suspect it's being discussed internally regarding renewal.

We're already going to need 2 more CB's over the next 1/2 years with Schar and Burn being so old, so makes no sense to sell him, and can't see Liverpool offering an insane amount that we're happy to take, as good as Botman is, he's not the next VVD

 

Every effort should be made to get a new contract sorted before next summer.
