I think we have identified 5 key positions:

GK: Henderson

CB: Botman

Winger: Diaby

LB: Lodi

ST: Nunez

I can see the first 4 happening, Nunez will be a stretch too far but its nice to see some ambition. I've said all along that I see us signing Toney, and I will stick by that.

After these positions, it will be wheeling and dealing time and be very dependent on who leaves and who becomes available. We will probably sign a CM but may well be a loan or someone fairly cheap who gives us something different.

That'd be some window.

I think this window will tell us a lot about the owners 'real' ambitions for next season.  If we start bringing in players like Botman, Diaby and Nunez that shouts they've their sights on Champions League qualification.

Hardy seemed convinced the Paqueta deal was bound to happen at 50m but Waugh and Edwards seem to refute that over last 24 hours. Waugh saying while he’s a target he’s not a priority for Howe.

I don’t really agree we need a specialist DM, unlike some here. I love Bruno but he’s not an attacking mid and he’s clearly most comfortable at the base (See Arsenal at home). I think we absolutely need another comfortable ball player who is more attacking and has multiple ways to create and score. But happy to agree to disagree.

Bruno with a new DM behind Paqueta is the way to go for me

Paqueta seems more of a CAM (Coutinho/ Bruno Fernandes), which is fine if he was available for around 30m. I would not spend anything more than that on him, though. We should wait it out and address our other positions before we go after him, in my opinion.

In an odd way, signing Bruno has stopped us signing Paqueta.

Midfield has almost gone to the back of the list because Bruno has come in and the rest of them have been performing, including the Brazilian tank that is Joelinton.

It's a deal I could see revisted in January or next summer but I can't see us touching a CM for 40m when we have 4 other positions that need filled.

I'd like to think we can start tapping him up for the following season because he certainly fits the bill.

We need a midfielder who can control/dictate the play. Bruno is more of an off the ball first player who when he gets it can do positive stuff. We need someone who is always on the ball and does the positive stuff with it. Like Silva was at City. I haven’t seen enough of Bruno’s mate so I don’t know what kind of player he is other than he looks a player. I’d prefer a DCM first, however.

Paqueta could play the RF of 3-4-3 if we're going 3 at the back at any point, which the Lodi interest suggests we might. Or as the 10 in a 4-2-3-1 (or obviously Bruno's role in a 4-3-3 with Bruno dropping back). I think he looks perfect but I feel like we'll be mainly looking to continue strengthening from the back while bringing in a couple of forwards or wingers.

I think Paqueta is one of those (not unlike Bruno) where we aren't necessarily chasing to get that deal done but if its later in the window, we've done most/all of our other business and we get word that Lyon would do business at an amount we're happy with, we'd do the deal.

Even with MA gone and the promise of better days ahead I don't care for transfer windows anymore. no protracted negotiations, rumors, back and forth, dodgy sources, itks etc. I just want to wake up in August with the deals done kind of thing.

Not making a judgement on this thread or anyone like, and I'll exit forthwith, but I just never realized how the part of me that liked the offseason spectacle was unceremoniously chucked into the sea years ago.

 Paqueta won't ever be available for around £30m. That being said, while I do agree with the sentiment that a few other positions needs to be filled first, I do think a central midfielder, either an offensive or defensive one depending on how we want Bruno to play, has to be a priority after RW and LB in my opinion. I know we have ''depth'' there. But an injury to Bruno and that is a relegation battling midfield.

To take the team to the next level, as well as filling the holes at LB and RW, Shelvey needs to replaced. Howe has done well to improve him as much he has, but he's still extremely limited on and off the ball. He tends to take up similar positions to Bruno awell. The type of midfielder we replace him with depends on how we intend to play Bruno.

And, what’s your problem?

You can’t guarantee something then when it’s questioned offer to bet the person but change what you said originally. That’s mental

Used to call them midfielders in my day ?

 I do think someone who calls themselves a midfielder should be as effective out of possession as in it.
