A Monster today, still useless going forward but nothing got past him at the back.

So often the whipping boy for fan frustrations on here, understandably from an attacking point of view maybe, but often over the top imo.

 

Thought he was the stand out in our back 4 tonight, particularly in the air and on the cover.

He's definitely a very large part of the reason why we look so pedestrian going forward. I can't fault him for effort at all and he actually gets into good positions sometimes but he just doesn't have anything to offer as an attacker. Given that we really try to attack down the wings a lot, it's a real issue.

 

I think the biggest issue for us compared to last season though is that we don't look rock solid at the back anymore so if keeping him in there helps us stop shipping goals then fair enough. He was quality defensively today.

Yeah, he had a pass for a long time due to how strong we were defensively but since that side of our game has gone out of the window then it’s hard to justify his position in the starting eleven.

Only half watched the game. 
 

Saw at least one attack break down as soon as Burn got on the ball. 
 

 

And saw him make a good covering tackle at the end.

Think part of our problem as a whole team this year has been the wrong full back has been going forward. 

 

BDB was successful last year at staying back and tucking in to create a back 3 when Trippier went forward. 

 

This year I feel like we've seen a lot less of Trippier bombing down the right and a lot more of Burn getting forward, which isn't the type of player he is.

Weird game. He was very good defensively but absolutely tragic going forward

Good defensively? He played brentford players onside a lot. Was piss poor for 60 minutes then he picked up later on.

Opponents are constantly targeting our left side. Burn has to be dropped. Today he was ok though, he is just too slow.

I have a heart attack every time I see him trying to make a recovery run against a fast winger. Hall can’t come soon enough.

It’s a weird one as he gives us so much more solidity when defending set pieces, he gets his head on the ball so often. Yet his play going forward is difficult to watch at times. He’s going to be a great squad player but it is a bit mad that he’s our starting left back

Played them inside in a very dangerous situation. Seems like he does that at least once a game. Don’t know if it’s lack of mobility to get back in line if he drops deep on the cover or he’s just not switched on enough.

Other aspects of his game were good though. Until he crossed the halfway line.

It's a measure of how far we've come that people are getting their knickers in a twist over Dan Burn. 

 

He's a good few levels above what we've been used to over the last decade or so, being slow and not being Alaba or Robertson is about as bad as it gets, otherwise he's a very solid defender and good on the ball. Even 2 or 3 years ago he'd be one of our best players.

Thought he ended the game well but was clearly being targetted at the start and they got through a few times. Thankfully Wissa was the one getting on the end of the chances.

Poor concentration and reading of the game. There’s a reason why he’s spent most of his career not at this level.

But also arguably saved our win with a last ditch tackle around 80ish minutes. No Dan Burn bashing here. Cheers.

I think people are underestimating how strong a 4th placed PL team can be. The names of the CL are dazzling people and actually you don't have to be Roberto Carlos at LB to be a good LB. You are a defender primarily. Dan Burn defends us sufficiently by and large.

I am actually going to go further. I appreciate and understand his limitations, but Dan Burn for me is actually a very, very good defender (based purely on defensive attributes) his one flaw is his lack of pace but more often than not he makes up for this in his reading of the game.

 

He's a massive cog in our machine for me, alongside Trippier and Botman. It speaks volumes that he's part of the leadership team and when you see some of the 'off the ball' stuff today you see more than just the lanky, try-hard, local lad. He's an intelligent and talented defender and a Geordie to boot.

If Hall comes in, either our system changes or Trippier stays back. Maybe that's wrong, but I'm not totally sure people have considered that that might be the case.
