Matt Targett: set to sign for Leeds United (Wilson) / no he isn't (Ryder)

Recommended Posts

How did we end up signing him permanently anyway? I'm sure after the initial loan it went quiet for a while as though we were looking elsewhere. Although I remember in the lap of honour at the end of the season the fans singing one matty targett. Wonder if that swayed them [emoji38]

 Longstaff was nee worse than Targett like.

Longstaff was our worst player. Targett was one of our better players yesterday. That's my opinion.

At the time we purchased him we were struggling to find a more suitable target. renan Bruno's old team mate was the one we were linked to heavily at this point. Either way he did extremely well for us on loan and the cost was relatively cheap if it wasn't for the injuries we would have got our money back without many issues imo.

Targett as bad as Longstaff yesterday FFS

That’s nonsense IMO. Targett wasn’t amazing. Some of his crossing was pretty crap. But after over a year without  a start. It was fairly promising.

That’s the worst I’ve seen Longstaff play and he was our worst starter on the day by a mile.

Remember that video of our end of season lap of honour? Bruno was pointing to Targett saying "we have to sign him!". In my mind, I imagine that our management decided at that point to gift Bruno a Matt Targett.

Aye. Was lush that [emoji38]

Targett deserved a contract, imho, did really well. It was just injuries and BDB that cocked it up. Mind I'm completely blinded by his stealing the ball off of James Justin? then releasing Willock that, eventually, led to Bruno's winner v Leicester

Hall and Targett back up is solid LB

LCB has good back up

RB does

LCM is ok with the Joes

not sure if Miley is Tonali or Bruno backup but RCM seems fine

LW is good.

All other positions are weak and need strengthening

One thing I’ll give Targett for him to remain in the squad, he’s the closest to Hall without us needing to change our style. Not for the progressive passes, but for the unselfish overlaps that Hall gives Gordon, and the deliveries (which weren’t good yesterday by large).

Kelly playing LB would not give us that. Which again points Kelly as a weird signing because he’s effectively 3rd choice LCB for at least another season.

I feel as though he was a lazy signing. He was decent on loan and it was rumoured we were after that lad who Forest signed from Atletico. There was a couple of weeks between the season ending and us signing Targett, and the consensus was that we wanted someone a bit more attack minded.

Was as if we just wanted to get someone in early doors and at a decent enough fee, which is fair enough.

The signing made complete sense at the time, and was one I was really keen on as were most people on here tbh. The fee was around £12m if I remember correctly, and in the 6 months prior when he was on loan, he was incredibly solid, with him coming in being one of the reasons our defensive record improved in that survival season (Along with Burn), and he was also incredibly liked in the squad by all accounts.

At that time, the consensus that summer was that we where going to be in a transitional season that year, where we could maybe push for a Europa League spot, but the main season goal was to just be lower top half, without any threat of relegation, which he would have been perfect for. He then got injured, and we got Champions League football, and that transitional season just didn't happen, so the squad very quickly passed him by.

He has been a victim of circumstance, and the fact that our 25th placed squad member is Targett shows just how much we've gone forward in recent years.

I also think he was solid if unspectacular yesterday, with the occasional rustiness thrown in.

Signing him made sense when we did and he was superb in his first season with us, i remember saying that he always give you a solid performance in any game and don't recall him having many bad games with us, he was just unlucky with injuries and rotations but he can still play a role.

Agreed. Ironically, he was probably our safest purchase the summer he came in. I don't believe he had a fitness record anything like what we've seen prior to coming here, and it's shattered his career here, unfortunately.

Gordon/Barnes          Isak/Osula          Murphy/Miggy

Joe/Joe                     Tonali/Bruno        Bruno/Longstaff

Hall/Targett   Botman/Burn(25)?   Schär(25)?/Lascelles(25)?   Tino/Trippier(25)?

Kelly               Kelly                         Kelly?

I’m not sure if it is just lazy journalism and tenuous links between certain clubs and former managers, or in Almiron’s case, his former club.

But there seems to be a lot of noise around outgoings and possible deals all of a sudden. Dubravka, Kelly, Almiron and now Targett. Albeit a rumour from that useless sausage, Bailey.

Maybe we are seriously trying to shift 2 or 3 so that we can move for someone this window?
