Just had a look on Villa Talk and, wow, they are properly turning on Gerrard already. The Mackems would be proud of such kneejerking.  https://www.villatalk.com/topic/22443-steven-gerrard/page/288/

Wow.

A few too many of them have bought their own hype. A mediocre squad that had a good transfer window.  Does anyone bother to look at a form table? It's as if they think Bruce is still in charge here.

Shame Wood can't get injured  as he's shite!

Asm also needs to stop thinking he's Lionel Messi, instead of "Usually Messy "

Just saying like.

Are you unhappy with Wood's performance, I can see why people might if they watch highlights be but we have 10 points out of 12 since he joined.  He Hasn't scored but him being in the side and a focal point but also dropping towards the left mostly, especially against everton meant that they were not able to double up on ASM.

Just thinking, our pen… VAR is checking for a ‘clear and obvious error’ or is it checking whether the foul was inside the box?

If the former, it clearly wasn’t obvious and the ref gave it, so by the rules it should be a pen?

Yeah, but then what about the offside by a toenail goal of theirs? For once we really benefited from VAR today.

Trippier took the free kick like a penalty anyway.

They’re different rules though, aren’t they? We know offside is judged exactly by VAR. Some other offences are judged by this ‘clear and obvious error’ test.

Really just asking if the rules were applied properly.

It was applied correctly. From the EPL website:

"VAR will be used only for “clear and obvious errors” or “serious missed incidents” in four match-changing situations: goals; penalty decisions; direct red-card incidents; and mistaken identity."

So you start with the situation and then look for the errors or things missed. The situation isn't the foul but the decision to award the penalty so you look at all aspects from the build up to the foul.

When looking at the award of a penalty, they will look at all aspects (they have a check list), starting if it was a foul, were they any fouls before it, was it in the box etc

During that checklist, it was deemed there was clear evidence that the foul took place outside the box. It was close but we scored and won anyways.

Yeah, but I just can’t see how it could be a clear error, since it’s so close to the line. It’s arguably on the line.

Which means it’s understandable that the ref gave a pen, and it should not have been overturned?

Clear evidence based on the replay is not the same as deciding that the error was clear and obvious. Or is it?

I thought the point was that they don’t re-referee the game, they decide if the error itself is obvious. Which here is isn’t.

Here’s from the VAR FAQ:

Quote

What qualifies as a “clear and obvious error”?

In testing, there was no unanimity. Different VARs came up with different outcomes.

But the VAR should not be asking, "Do I think it's right or wrong?" The question is, "Is what the match officials have done a clear and obvious error?"

There is a very high bar for that intervention.
