The game was a sell out, but lets not let facts get in the way of you spinning your constant drivel.

There were a good few seats empty. Go and watch the match again. It will be your clubs usual shite of making figures up

Look at the game again coward not talking shite at all

howay man there was overtime on at Nissan and it’s the school holidays so that limits the clubs ability to give away the free tickets.

They had 42K every game last season as well. Honest.

It was only some strange optical illusion which often made it look like half that number :)

If they keep getting "full houses", their decades long record of having the most empty seats of any stadium in England (although maybe MK Dons give them competition nowadays?) could be under threat. Wouldn't bet against them keeping it though.

You can seem big and sporting about them whilst at the same time, saying the exact same thing have a sarcastic and damning dig at their status - so - winning a Premier League game is a massive big deal to Sunderland, its only natural they'd be excited and celebrate their best achievement of the last 8years. Works both ways.

Yeah I can't blame them for being giddy, they've made some exciting signings and have just comfortably won their first Premier League game in 8 years.

But... they are very, very sure they're going to pull up all sorts of trees this season now. I mean they might, but very sure. I suppose if you can't dream, what's the point in football?

Recently they have been  up and down more times than a brides nightie, you watch, a few seasons of fuck all and they will be back to hating every fucker in charge.

Happens every single time. [emoji38]

Their attendance on Saturday was announced as 46k.  it's a bloody good crowd for a club that has been in the shite for such a long time, but I don't think it's a capacity crowd.  Doesn't the SoL hold 49k?

There are 49k seats but I think due to how they segregate and where the away fans are the actual sellable capacity is about 47k these days, that's what one of my R&W mates says anyway, he reckons there's been talk for a while of them moving the away support back into the lower bowl which should get the sellable capacity back nearer to 49k.

When we played them in the cup the other year it was announced as a sell out at around 45k iirc

Was a photo doing the rounds on twitter of big blocks of empty seats, the pictures were taken off TV and the clock was showing the 53rd minute so couldn't be explained by it being at the end of the match or right either side of HT.

It's a good crowd but fact is a lot of them are only there for the Premier League, not for Sunderland. They played 23 home league games last season, not a single sell out and they had some very sparse crowds at times, especially midweek.

I have family who tried to get a ticket for Saturday and the only ones left were hospitality at £240.

He don't go.

I don't doubt people will buy tickets and not turn up, I know how flaky their fan base is.

Not as many in groups as there were, you had gaps of about twenty tickets in a few places. That's why I mentioned about single tickets

Yes that's about right.

Old capacity used to be around 49K but then they shifted the away fans into the upper tier, further segregation had to come in which reduced the maximum capacity. I think it went down further as they blocked out the front 5 or so row in the away section due to coins coming down from previous away fans.

I think there's also been a few hundred taken out to be used for the extension of boxes and some new restaurant (corporate bollocks)

There was however no 'empty blocks of seats' on Saturday whatsoever, the game was a sell out, so unless some fans who also happen to sit together, decided in unison prior to the game to not turn up, what's being said is a complete myth - https://www.safc.com/news/2025/july/16/general-admission-for-premier-league-opener-sold-out--only-premium-space-remains/

I never get the obsession fans on both sides, or anywhere in the country have about attendances. Just look after yourself, go and support your team as you can't affect what others do.

TV doesn't lie coward. Go and watch the match back and the gaps were there during the game. No myth at all

 Love the Upshot.

Decade from hell. Its not that much different to most of their decades. Hardly a fall from grace of their best decade in living memory (if were saying this was a decade) 2005-2015 included fighting relegation every year and getting relegated on record low points and a derby match they had pushing 20k empty seats for. Truly halcyon days.
