West Ham are the best team they could've hoped to play (other than Burnley). They've had a terrible summer, added barely nothing to their terrible squad from last season and have got a new(ish) manager who can't get a grip of the team.

Wouldn't shock me to see Sunderland get 3 points against Burnley next week and then pick up just a couple of points here and there up to the start of November.

Did the hammers not beat us at home last season? I hate these cunts as much as anyone, but they’ve got a good recruitment team and look to have a good young pacy side with some experience mixed in. They’ll tail off undoubtedly, but they won’t go down unfortunately. No reason they can’t be a Forrest, Brighton, or Brentford eventually.

Some of their recruitment has been decent, they've bought players with a lot of potential and players with experience - that Diarra yesterday looked very decent, but according to some on here he's shite cause no one else wanted to sign him  Him and Xhaka are better than a lot of lower league teams midfield IMO.

They're going the whole Forest route where they just have to buy buy buy and hope they stay up and build from that - we should still absolutely beat them at theirs but it won't be as easy as people think - we lost to some dodgy teams last year.

And West Ham still outplayed Sunderland away from home.

They created more chances, had a higher XG, retained more possession and played more passes into the final third.

But they were unlucky not to score one of the early chances and then Sunderland scored some lovely, well taken goals.

Sunderland did well to create those chances, but when you look past the scoreline, it wasn't as shining a success as you'd imagine.

The stats are misleading then. It was an even first half but Sunderland clearly had the better of the second half. West Ham were slow, uncreative and could barely put two passes together. Sunderland were the better team, we just have to accept it. They were given a massively favourable first game and they took full advantage

Read back on here - pretty sure it was

Well if it was in the context of our own recruitment issues ("even the Mackems are making more progress than us!"), the responding argument was that the likes of him are easier to sign because there's less competition for his signature; meanwhile they've no choice but to throw as much shit as possible in the hope that some of it sticks. We can't operate like that if we're trying to improve on 5th.

If there's been people saying outright that he's shit because he's signed for Sunderland then fair enough.

FFS let them enjoy their first game back in the PL, if they can’t enjoy days like yesterday, what’s even the point of being a fan?

We all know they will face much tougher challenges in the weeks and months ahead and as a result we'll find out how much of yesterday was down to adrenaline and the euphoria of them being back in the top flight soon enough.

Anyone making bold statements and firm conclusions about any team's chances after the first weekend, must be daft with short memories

Nah fuck that man, I wish them nothing but abject misery, deflation & embarrassment

Anyone else wanting them to "Enjoy their win" can do one too

I agree.

People on here have them relegated by Christmas for some reason. Aye they’ve signed unknown players, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be shite. Got some good experience and leadership with Xhaka as well.

Personally would’ve loved them to stay down and never play them again.

The two big goals were crosses and brilliant headers. That’s not something that’s going to happen every game, but they took the points when they were there and that’s all you can do. They won’t finish higher then 15th, but early on have giving themselves confidence they can get high 30s which is safety.

There were definitely some on here that used that argument.

Me and I still maintain that, but the said person also tried to use Caicedo as an example, when a quick google search would have put him right.

Wtf is this bullshit.

He’s saying if you look at the stats without the scoreline then they got beat as the scoreline obviously isn’t that important. A lot of people claimed all summer yesterday was when shit would get real for them, they played decent and won, I believe they could be fine this season.
