I'm the opposite, I want Dubravka in until the end this season, he's proven he's been better this season, he's actually commanded his box well for the most part, and his calmness on the ball allows us to control games a bit better, whereas the majority of the time we look ragged at the back with Pope on the ball. I also don't think Pope's shot stopping has been miles better either. Also if Dubravka made some of the mistakes Pope did today, he'd have got pelters.

I just checked FBref for the last year, and it basically sums the two up.

Pope has better ability at stopping crosses and sweeping, though Dubs isn't actually as bad as I was expecting, Dubravka has a better save percentage, goals against and clean sheet ratio too, so for those who want a goalkeeper to "Be a goalkeeper" Dubravka has actually been better in that metric  

 

That said, the difference between their Launch percentage is ridiculous, Pope kicks long over twice the amount that Dubravka does, thats such a big flaw in his game, and you can't be controlling games when you have a keeper doing that.

I think the defence and crowd have more confidence in Dubravka's kicking than Pope. It's a huge issue for us

 

 

 

 

Go back and read my comment in the thread from the first goal we conceded. Whilst you're at it, go and read my comments on Dubravka in recent weeks.

 

Dubravka had a good run of games for us, but you cannot ignore that he faced so few shots in that run of games. He did well with what little he had to do though, and his kicking was obviously much better than Pope's. But he has severe limitations which haven't gone away. He doesn't command his box well - which I would bet was the reason Pope came back in today - and he does not sweep behind the defence to allow us to play further up the pitch. Pope makes the saves Dubravka does and then makes more saves he just isn't good enough to make. 

 

It is frustrating that Pope dropped a fucking shambolic clanger almost immediately today. But, outside his kicking, he was fine otherwise. If Pope drops more clangers like that in quick succession, then we can have this discussion. I'm glad Howe has got him back in goal for the rest of the season. I don't think he is the same standard of goalkeeper post injury, but he is still our best goalkeeper.

You need to filter to this season and Pope actually drops off loads compared to last season, whilst Dubravka is doing much better. But Pope is still comfortably ahead on defensive actions outside the area. And Pope is still slightly ahead on crosses stopped, save percentage and the XG saved stat. So Dubravka doing better than his previous season and Pope has regressed, but is statistically still better outside his kicking. And that is with his errors and obvious drop-off.

I think it’s negligible between the two of them these days tbh, which is a sad indictment of Pope.

 

We will upgrade in the summer and it will make a big difference imo.

It’s a howler from Pope. No doubt about it. He was decent enough otherwise. 
 

Bur the irony is Dubravka can’t dive to his right and waved in similarly crap strikes against Bromley and City. 
 

I love Pope. But we do need to upgrade if we can. I think there are other areas that need attention first. But sounds like our minds have been made up with Trafford. Which is fair enough really.

Pope is streets ahead of Dubs as a keeper. He’s useless with his feet so we need to recognise that when we play out. Pope’s keeping abilities will win us more games than Dubs’ distribution skills.

 

Pope got caught too deep in his box for their goal because Murphy dropped a clanger that had the whole defensive out of shape.

I think today highlights that both our main keepers have weaknesses that we really need to improve upon.

Pope is the better shot stopper, aside from their 1st goal today.

Dubravka is better at coming out for the ball, and with his feet.

Ultimately, if we want to step up to the next level, it’s another position where we need to improve.

Think I'd go Dubravka right now. Think he deserved to keep the shirt, and I'm no big fan of either.

The first today was a shocker from Pope and he did'nt look great in general.

I think when we're up against it we need Pope in goal as he has much better command of his area, control on crosses and doesn't stay routed to his goal line.

 

However, when we play out from the back and are trying to play around a press Dubz is by far the better player and you can see the players feel that too and I'm not just talking about long balls, his close control and short passing under pressure from the opposition is much better than Pope too.

 

Tough one really because both have a good claim to start but both have glaring issues that could cost us games.
