Since they are talking about that hypothetical “big” and what really is a “big” club – talk SPORT has defined what they mean by the adjective – and what factors they took into account in their rankings. This is part of their definition of what constitutes a big club. “A variety of factors, including size of support, wealth, standard of stadium, current standing and historic success.” “We’ve taken all these aspects into account – giving more weight to current situation than the past.” “With less and less importance attached to events as you delve further into the history books– and come up with a ranking of the top 30 biggest football clubs in Britain.” “Inevitably there are areas of dispute and clubs who narrowly missed out on making the cut.” Newcastle are above several current Premier League clubs including West Ham, Leicester City, Sunderland, Southampton, Stoke City, West Brom, Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough, Watford and Burnley. Newcastle are also one place above Celtic in the rankings with Sunderland ranked 13th – unlucky for some. The only surprise to us is that Everton are just above us in 7th place but the other clubs above us we would have expected.
