Emery joined them in 2022, and they weren't in a better position by then.

Couldn’t be arsed to check my dates on exactly when Emery joined, but the point I was making was they’d had 3 years of their current owners, when we were taken over.

So they were slightly ahead of us in terms of both clubs having new ambitious owners.

And we've both had our current managers for a similar length of time.

We were in the championship and literally two days from administration when our owners arrived and got promoted a year later. Absolutely on our knees.

We got promoted, stayed up on the last day of the season after, and were 17th the year after when they sacked Gerrard. We were barely surviving at PL level when Emery came in. He's been incredible.

Three years of European football, reaching the CL QF and beating PSG (and very nearly knocking them out) and a record that shows us as more or less the third biggest points winners since he joined us is just mind bendingly good.

It's fucking nuts. I'm not saying we're going to do stupid stuff like win the title or owt, but fuck me, what an insanely good job he's done from a low starting point.

And obviously, whilst being unable to spend what we'd be able to (ring a bell?) and under one form of PSR madness the whole time.

Not dissimilar to us stinking out the league and nailed on for another relegation.

Fair play to Villa. On an outstanding run of form. You looked poor at the start of the season but what a transformation. Top 4 looks odds on.

look at our results over the last two seasons. You don’t fluke consistency like that.

the one thing we are is undeniably well coached.

I dont follow Villa closely but what formation do you use and has Emery changed this over the last few seasons?

As you probably know Howe is wedded to 433 and we very rarely deviate from this.

I think he joined 1 year after we got Howe.

Villa are a great example of what happens when winning becomes a habit. We've had it before when we haven't been at our best, but with Villa it's hard for me to remember a time I thought they played really well. Bayern and PSG the two big exceptions.

4-1 against us.

We’ve not won a trophy as prestigious as the FA Cup.  Our league cup win is all we have over Villa in the time period I’m talking about.

Im not diminishing anything we’ve achieved. Off the pitch that was built ok the back of Staveleys leadership. Howe kept it together on the pitch off the backs of the squad he built with Staveley and Ashworth and in spite of the clubs poor hires and leadership. That’s why made last season extra special- we lost our off pitch leaders, had a shit summer and still came out on top. Again in spite of what was poor leadership.

We had another shitshow summer and this year there isn’t a Staveley era signing or 2 to help bail us out.

Villa are going to finish in the top 6 for the fourth successive season. 4 seasons of European football from league finishes. Got 66 points while going deep in the CL and FA Cup. Missed out on CL last season on GD, wheeled and dealed some more, sold ladies team now back in the CL hunt.  That’s not just down to great coaching by Emery.  But the owners have Done a great job to keep them there.

Saudi bucks obviously supported us. But apart from Howe and his team all the brains behind our success have left.

They wheeled and dealed because they got the PSR gift horse of £100m for Grealish and their ladies team was in the WSL.

The brains you talk about leaving seemed to be generally considered the ones who got us into a PSR black hole [emoji38]

You are having a bad week. So are NUFC. Still a whole 2nd half of the season to play for. Things can change quickly in football. Hopefully the form of some of our players does and our defensive injuries clear up and see what is available in the January market.

They played well in their 2-1 vs Arsenal but do agree they are winning games due to habit now.

Yeah, that win was very deserved. Looking at xG, only Villa and Man Utd has earned more than 1 xG against Arsenal in the league this season. Man Utd 1.52 in the opening game, and Villa 2.16. That's insanely good against that side.

They sold Grealish 6 years ago man. That PSR profit has been written offf for years.

I respected their gamble last January.  It almost worked.  When they were in PSR trouble they got Maatsen in a dodgy deal last season.

Ashworth had 2 plans to avoid FFP issues one of which was closed after he left.  Staveley and co. weren’t perfect and June 2024 was a shitshow and a mess. But they (along with Ashworth, Howe etc) still built the squad that got us Isak, Tonali, Bruno etc. They wanted Emery then got us Howe. They convinced PIF to buy the club ffs.  They got Ashworth. They convinced PIF to open the cheque book and sign Isak - convinced Isak to sign. Tonali, Bruno, Trippier.  They extended Tonali and Bruno.

Since they left we’ve had 1 major re-signature in Gordon. maybe 1 signing that’s been considered a coup - routinely failing to land high reputation players going back to Marc Guehi 2024.

Im not having a bad week.  I’ve said this all summer and most of last season too. I’m bringing it up again now because all the attention is on Eddie Howe when it should be on the owners.  We aren’t midtable because of an underperforming coach(Eddie has made mistakes).  We are midtable because of rudderless leadership since July 2024 at the latest. It’s caught up.

It’s not a change of opinion or being emotional.  I said in September i would have no issues with this squad finishing 8th.  The squad isn’t good enough to compete in CL and be meaningfully better than most teams in this division
