I have to say quite often the people around me tone their language down and usually go out of their way to make him feel welcome. Quite often people come and give him a flag etc. I don’t swear when he’s there but also I think some exposure to swearing is good because I can then influence him in terms of him knowing what he can or can’t say etc. The old fella next to us the other day at the Villa game was even singing “Bruno’s flipping magic…” Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Tiresias Posted November 3, 2022 Share Posted November 3, 2022 There is some middle ground here lol I swear a lot but in a crowded public space with kids about it is reasonable that while you may judge it fine for your kids to be around that language your standards aren't everyones standards so is perfectly reasonable that you are expected to moderate it somewhat, and also it is possible to be overreacting to some colourful language and get in a moral panic about it. I’d also ban alcohol in the ground and maybe give stewards the power to refuse entry if they believe an individual has imbibed excessive amounts of alcohol prior to trying to enter the ground. Which is what we're discussing. You want to change imagery to adjust the territory blind people want to engage with, but don't want people to adjust the territory women want to engage with. Nah it's for visually impared people and it's not the sole reason, there are plenty of other reasons to as well, none of which exclude anyone. Being fully blind is different obviously, but there are ways to make things accessible that crucially don't exclude other people by doing so. That's the difference. Swearing might be excluding someone who if they're an adult, imo, need to get a grip, but if you stopped swearing from being allowed in stadiums you'd be excluding plenty of people in doing so. That's the difference. It's like the people who move in next to a music venue then petition to get it closed, it's exactly the same principle. You go to the match, you go in with your eyes open to an extent. And yes, of course I'd have a different attitude, as would most people I would hope. Personally it was my 21th Newcastle game on stadium. Stadium tour friday, the match on saturday and sunday we were lucky enough to visit Joelinton at his house. After the game he took our flag down to the dressing room where it was signed by all the players. The next day we picked up the flag at his house, got signed our shirts, flags, match programmes and stuff like that, photos. He's just a class act, on and off the pitch. Will never forget this trip and I can't wait to visit again. 2 of the guys travelling with us had never seen Newcastle live before, they were speechless.
