From BBC…. If Villa win Europa….6th will go into CL

If Villa finish outside the top four, the Premier League will have six teams in the Champions League:

The top four

Villa as Europa League winners

The EPS

Villa's precise final position would decide the Premier League's total European allocation.

If they finish fifth, the EPS passes to the Premier League's sixth-placed team.

Villa would need to finish 5th (currently 4th) and win the EL.

There are so many permutations next Sunday…..Should Villa win Europa on Wednesday, and lose away to Man City on Sunday (assuming Liverpool also beat Brentford), then Villa would be 5th and whoever is 6th goes into CL….Could be an interesting Sunday, especially if Man City beat Bournemouth on Tuesday.

Don't think that's quite right. It will decide the amount of CL places, but not the total amount of European spots.

I think if Villa finish 5th and win the EL, we gain a CL spot, but lose an EL spot.

It’s crazy. Feels like we are probably discounted from the race which should help. Fulham are very beatable and the rest of them have tough games.

Cannot see a world where Villa turn up and spin Citeh on Sunday at the Etihad. Brentford will need something at Anfield, Liverpool are beatable.

So would that mean top 7 in the table gets Europe?

Think in that scenario it would be top 6 CL, 7th EL, 8th EC.  Not 100% though.

Spot on assuming Villa win Europa and finish 5th……Otherwise Top 5 CL…..6/7 Europa and 8 Conference.

Having just looked it up the winner of the European Conference automatically ualifies for the Europa League the following season - which could be easier than qualifying through the Premier League.  So it might be worthwhile if we could win it.

Obviously I would much rather be in the Champions League but winning that is unlikely.  We are not one of the best few teams in Europe and are unlikely to be any time soon.  But winning the Europa League in a couple of years time would be a genuine achievement.  So maybe a place in the Conference could be better than no place on the Conference.

Not worth it for us to play in Europe, our spending would be limited to 70% of earnings rather than 85% (we can actually go to 115% and pay a 'luxury tax') with a pure domestic campaign. I would rather we have that headroom to recalibrate next year and go again the year following.

Am I I right in thinking- we win 2-0 and Brentford lose 2-1 it’d go to head to head between us (and Brentford would come out on top)

Sunderland will do Chelsea like. Chelsea are a bunch of fannies and the mackems will be well up for it.

Mental to think they’ve came up via the playoffs, beat us twice, very likely to finish above us and have a very good chance of playing in Europe next season. You’d have got a canny price for that last summer.

Unbelievable season from them. Hats off.

The math for 8th to be possible:

1. Obviously we have to win vs Fulham, and Brentford to lose vs Liverpool, and overcome the goal difference. For instance, if we end up with the same GD and same number of goals scored with Brentford, then we'll still finish behind them due to h2h record.

2a. If Chelsea wins vs Tottenham, then we can't finish 8th, because Chelsea (52 points) will face Sunderland (51 points) on the last day, so at least one of them will get at least 53 points.

2b. Given Chelsea's massive advantage of GD, unless some crazy scoreline happens, if Chelsea couldn't win vs Tottenham, then we must need Chelsea to draw vs Sunderland for us to overtake both of them.

3. Everton cannot beat Tottenham by a margin of at least 3 goals more than our winning margin vs Fulham.

Having all of these to happen is too unlikely, I'll just forget about it.

Reckon we win and Brentford lose with the required goal swing, the Everton one just won't happen, they don't have 5+ goals in them.

Chelsea and Sunderland will draw

Spurs could fuck it up by not turning up but id take the consolation prize of a last day shoot out for them

I assume the reason 7th is Europa League is because City won the FA Cup? And 8th is Conference because City won the League Cup?

Crazy to think 9th could get some form of Europe yet 2 seasons ago we finished 7th and got nowt

Ugh, can very realistically see Sunderland getting conference place now and even worse, any prem team in that "should" win it. Chelsea at home is about as winnable a fixture as they could get at the moment.

Only silver lining would be I can see their league form tanking next season if they had to juggle European games.

Can 9th get it if Villa finish 5th and win Europa, or does that just mean extra CL place but a Europa place is lost?
