llcoolc157
A win win situation in my book… go gangbusters in the last 3 games and pick up 9 points… if we qualify for Conference, great, it’s a winnable competition and some decent games/grounds along the way… If we don’t qualify we can focus 100% on the league and 2 domestic trophies… no excuses and a definite chance of success… Whey I’m looking forward to the new season already…. Pretty much exactly how I see it. Sounds daft but there was almost too much football this year. If we end up with no Europe but good runs in the two domestic cups I’ll be happy. I accept that’s purely a selfish viewpoint.
alexf
I might be in the minority here but I'm actually disappointed we haven't had a chance to compete in the Europa or conference league in last few years. It's been amazing qualifying for the Champions League twice and felt like we leaped straight from a relegation candidate to the premier club competition in rapid time. However in terms of growth and gaining experience and chances for success, I feel it's not aided us. Villa will have had 4 consecutive seasons in Europe and 2 of those will have been champions League once they qualify again this year and will likely had a Europa League trophy now too. In comparison we have been one season on and one season off. I was disappointed we missed out on conference when Man U won the FA cup after we finished 7th, but we did manage to win a league Cup and get back into the CL. Just think the "off seasons" We need to be getting some form of European football to gain experience, blood more youngsters and have a shot at more trophies. By default any premier League team should essentially be getting to the final of the europa or conference.

I'm actually looking forward to playing the last 3 games of this season never mind next season. It might be a long shot, but at least we've still technically got something to play for. Without much pressure as well, although if we are still in with a chance, that might change by the last fixture.

Semi final If the cup changes have done nothing else they’ve made the end-of-season run in more interesting. Every single Premier League team will feel like if they can squeak into Europe they have a fantastic chance of a trophy. Adding more English sides to the CL has downgraded that slightly too I think. Not in quality, just in excitement and novelty.
Decky
No chance this team wins four games in a row after the shite they've been serving in recent months.

If Villa turn up they should be brushing aside Freiburg with ease. So they will have essentially won a trophy (qualified for CL if they hadn't already via the league) and only had one tough opponent. Even that is arguable of you consider Forest have been in amongst relegation all season. Then just look at Palace in the conference. Absolute stroll. But I still can only see us picking up 7 points at best. I just don't trust this team to go against their form book all season and suddenly win 4 in a row. Since the UEFA became the Europa, there have been 16 Europa Cups. Spanish clubs have won 9 and English clubs 4. Sevilla themselves have won 7 of the last 20. Back in the late 80s-90s Italy won 8 of 11. Twas ever thus. Surely you see the difference now though? There's been dominance but what's happening now with the format change is basically facilitation. For a PL team not to win the Europa League every season would represent a massive under-performance. I had wondered if those horrendous Spurs and ManU teams cantered to the final only because they both phoned-in their league campaigns - and any serious team would succumb to fatigue - but Villa have immediately disproven that theory. For Conference League, see above but replace 'under-performance' with embarrassment.

But I reckon if that team were Brentford or Bournemouth, they’d probably get given quite a bit more grace than other teams (including ourselves). Villa have lost 6 of their last 10 domestic games, winning 2 and drawing 2. They got a couple of draws against Forest and Leeds who were 15th and 16th, and they beat West Ham (18th in table) and Sunderland (needed a 93rd min winner). No evidence at all to suggest they haven't phoned it in the same way us and Spurs did. The difference is Villa had already got enough points on the board from massively overperforming their xG earlier in the season and picking up points they didn't deserve. Their form around this time of the year compared to us and Spurs is probably very similar.

I suppose they did quite overtly throw the Spurs game the other day. Hopefully you're right and there's still hope that the circumstances of schedule is one thing which might trip-up the Europa League's future PL entrants. My fear/assumptions is the difference in quality/budget means there probably isn't any set of circumstances (beyond serious under-performance/freak result) that will stop the PL teams from routinely walking to these titles. The format is just so forgiving. Palace couldn't beat Larnaca or KuPS and yet still have found their way to the final no bother.

leffe186
Obviously I’ve had other things on my mind, but are we thinking it will be nine in Europe? Top four CL, Villa CL via Europa, 6th CL via money, 7th and 8th Europa, 9th Conference?
