He is a central midfielder just assumed they put him at right back as his older brother had and they thought we will stick him in that position.

Don't we have any actual right backs who can play at right back? Is it endemic through every age group?

Think it's more a trend across the game where instead of lads who might not be good enough/won't get in the team at CB being shifted out to full back it's now shifted to lads who might not be good enough or get a game in midfield get a go at full back instead as they'll theoretically be better players than the CB's.

Disclaimer that there's a very high chance of recency bias as I'm thinking about the likes of Hall, Lewis-Skelly, O'Reilly, Hinshelwood, and Rico Lewis who all first got in at full back but are/were/can play as midfielders, good option to have for these lads

It’s always happened and always will especially if the player is young / inexperienced for the age group he’s playing in.

Gary Neville arguably the Premier League’s most successful fullback was a central midfielder in youth football.

Didn't know that about Neville, thought he was just a failed CB! Although a story of his about once being a striker and being gradually moved backwards through the age groups does ring a bell

Sounds more like Carragher.

Why do we always have injuries you have to Google? I remember Barnes not too long ago teaching your lovely country about turf toe, now I'm looking up muscle distribution what the fuck man.

Ah yes, I think you're right, didn't Carragher even play striker for England at schoolboy/mid-teens age group levels or something?

I would bet that even then he scored more own goals than goals 😉

Defo playing down the injury

He didn’t seem particularly worried about it when he was talking about it at that awards ceremony the other night.

Isn't that everybody? Almost every MLB player was a short stop in high school for example.

There’s a clip of a teenage Michael Keane running amock as an attacker in a a game.

It’s very rare for any top level player to start as a fullback.  At a younger age level, these players just tend to be better than their peers so play further up.

I know a lad who went to school with Peter Ramage. Said it was like having Messi in your team in school games.

It's not that rare nowadays emery at psg and Archie gray have both done it this season, and they're one of only a handful of CMs at "big" clubs getting regular game time.

We could/should have given Shahar a few more opportunities, or more minutes... early cup games, dead rubbers (more than 5 mins at end of Quarabag 2L), then at least we'd have a better idea if he could make the step up if/when needed, instead of just letting him sit on the bench.
