 Never a pen

Jimenez is only looking to go down after getting the touch on the ball, just throws himself to Pope with spaghetti legs. Really good refereeing but Pope still got incredibly lucky as that's usually given (and VAR would never intervene as there's contact). Think it would have been a red too as Pope is not trying to play the ball.

The penalty decision could have gone either way, depending on the referee and how he was feeling that day, but once he makes a decision it isn't clear and obvious enough to overturn.

It's thick from Pope, but Jimenez is absolutely gagging for contact. So much so he changes the direction of his run.

Like others, I would have been very upset if we didn't get the penalty, but I can see why VAR didn't give it - it's not as clear and obvious as Sky make out. If an outfield player committed the same foul in the box and wasn't the last man there's no way VAR gives it. This will get talked about more because it's a keeper and he's the last man.

Had a great season but can see why Pope is a good keeper and not a top keeper due to ball at his feet, can be suspect at times.

Played really well, don't get some fans bashing ASM either, solid performance.

Isak running in behind gives us a different dimention which we have missed.

I think that's the biggest indicator of whether it's should've been given. If that happens to Isak and its not given we are all up in arms about it.

For what it's worth, I'm not sure it matters whether Jimenez is "looking for it" or whatever people want to call it. Pope fucks up and leans into him whilst doing his best to not make it obvious, but that should be given and I'm shocked VAR didn't give it.

Wrong!  To make it clear, and I'm sticking my head out here.  Those that think it's a penalty, in my opinion have not played a game of football.  What Jimenez has done is con you.  He's made it look like he's been fouled (which is clever .... or cheating).  Whatever your opinion is, then I'm sorry but my opinion is correct.  No foul by Pope, no penalty and if anything a free kick to Newcastle.  There, sorted.

He stops as soon as he touches the ball too to initiate more contact which I think he was anticipating but didn’t come. You’re absolutely seething if it’s the other way round though.

I think it helped that the ref was so far away from the ball for the penalty incident and couldn't give it

One of those where I don't think VAR would have overturned it no matter which way he gave it

Of course but it's a situation where I feel like VAR can't ever overturn the ref's decision, whatever it was.

I honestly think the fact that he was going down early is why he never got a penalty. In all honesty though there is minimal contact from Pope, and not at his legs.

If he went down later, he would have probably got a penalty and we couldn’t have had any complaints.

Let’s call it fair game since we should have had a penalty at their place earlier in the season, and I also think our penalty shout also deserved more of a look at.

Aye, but they wouldn't have overturned it had a penalty been given.

Fwiw, red cards for denying clear goal scoring opportunities in the box are only given if there's no attempt to play the ball, so would've been incredibly harsh to send Pope off there had it been given.

I remember the game they won late against us at st James under Rafa, Boly elbowed Perez and got away with it.

Aye, didn’t they bring down our player in the box, should have been a penalty, not given, and they get go up the other end, get a corner, and score from it?

I’m sure it was the point many of us were like ‘We need VAR’.

Yeah but what I'm saying is that if he gave it as a penalty I don't think they would have asked him to overturn it

So "clear and obvious".  I think not.

I really think he would have been booked, don’t think he would have been sent off. We also had a player back iirc I’d have to watch it again though
