Faded a bit late on. But we basically just surrendered possession. Wouldn’t mind seeing him start off more central and in the ‘deeper’ (if we actually play with a deeper CM) role with Bruno left or right of him.

Tbf though, as much as I've been wanting to see the same I could also see Tonali is less press resistant than Bruno. I think Tonali expects his teammates to move around into space whereas Bruno knows he's got to do most of it himself.

100%. I said as much in another thread. But he seemed much better at finding space tonight to receive the ball and does move it on quickly.

It might mean that we look to build attacks in other ways than just Bruno taking it off the CB’s toes and trying to magic something up.

I doubt we will see it too much this season. But the Big Joe/Little Joe dynamic also massively helped our midfield and general balance.

Tonali seems to cover space rather than rush to the ball.

Joelinton - Isak - Gordon

Willock - Tonali - Bruno

I know we say this every match but this dude's first time passing is something else.

I like it in that deeper position too. Adds a bit more urgency to the build up from the back.

Tonali benefitted from Bruno not playing

I think he benefitted from playing centrally moreso than any kind of issue playing with Bruno. I think for whatever reason he's a bit lost on the right side.

It's easy to miss his contribution on a tv screen and I think that's because he doesn't carry the ball much, but he's a pest to play against because he's on his man in a flash when we press high, and he moves the ball so quickly he can cause real damage if team mates are alive to it. Looked great tonight.

Said it before, saying it again. He will be a monster for us.

He's part of the few players that should be a guaranteed starter for me, we need every bit of quality we have out on the pitch. Will only get better from here.
