NUFC Transfer Rumours

I don't think a DM is going to help much while we press so aggressively. Sometimes Bruno is the highest pressing player in our entire midfield despite being the deepest mid. He keeps up pretty impressive defensive numbers despite this but it's fair to say he's not a defensive player?

I think Howe will focus more on how to manage space between defence/mid better instead.

Think the theres only a couple issues with our current midfield setup. None of them have the true defensive instincts of a high level DM. Joelinton still isn't great technically, control and passing under pressure at times can be off.

Will be interesting to see how it gets on in Europe as we are more than likely to get a tough group.

As it stands we definitely gain way more from the organised chaos of the 3 box to box system than we would with a more typically structured approach. There's only really been a few games where the weaknesses have been exposed, the vast majority of sides really struggle against it.

I think once we managed to get Bruno that more or less ruled us out signing an elite out and out DM. I'm firmly in the camp that I don't like him playing further forward. He hasn't that natural burst of athleticism or snap shot ability that you'd want from someone making regular runs into the box. That's why we surround him with ball winners like Joelinton and Tonali/Longstaff, it's a trade off. But it's hard to make a case that the defensive side of our game is suffering when we were among the meanest defences last season. A low assist count from midfield is probably the main outcome of how we're set up.

I think that's a good point, Winston, though as Georgie Boyo, says, you can scarcely have a DM who only gets played against the good sides. I wouldn't agree with him though about the viability of using any of our defenders in that role.

The problem with a specialist DM is that they tend to get a lot of possession, and if they're not able to use it well, then you lose a lot of attacking opportunities. The compromise we have at the moment is Bruno, who's good on the ball but not great defensively.

So really you want a midfielder who's good at both attacking and defensive roles. They're thin on the ground, cost a lot of money potentially and get snapped up by the wealthier clubs (eg Caicedo, Lavia, Rodri, MacAllister) Hopefully, in time, we're able to sort that.

We could try Tonali in that role, and I think that's what most of us were expecting when he signed, with Bruno being pushed further forward. What I think Eddie is doing at the moment is dividing those roles between them. This takes some co-ordination, and we'll have to see how it develops. Meantime, it doesn't solve the problem that you raised intially, about the problem of having to nullify a Foden (or maybe a Maddison )

I think that's it really. You only have to look at Chelsea and Liverpool fighting it out over Caicedo and Lavia, and in the end Chelsea ended up buying them both just to stop Liverpool getting one.

For us it's a case of just buying the best players we can. If we can't compete for the top CDM's then we'll just buy the best midfielders who can do a bit of both, like Tonali and Bruno. Neither are natural CDMs in my book, but they offer much more going forwards so there's a trade off.

And don't forget we still have Anderson and Willock etc to provide additional drive and threat from midfield when needed.

We need a CDM when playing against the citys, arsenal and liverpools of this world. Possession based teams who are high class at exploiting the space between the lines in the final third. Foden ran riot last weekend. A CDM option would help us nulify that whilst also giving us more protection when protecting leads later in games against other opposition.

All formations have weaknesses, but that one was no doubt spotted by Pep and, as you say, duly exploited.

Though I am satisfied and happy with how we have done our deals and what we have brought in, there is a bit part of me that wants breaking news emerging about us making one big signing out of the blue on deadline day. Would be really epic. Can

I think it would be harsh bringing a DM in and just keeping him for those games as he’s clearly set out what he has in mind with what he’s got. I think it’s more about utilising what we do have and using possibly a defender for that role if needed. Then it’s who do you sacrifice and who do you play at the back.

   Barnes Wilson Murphy

      Tonali           Bruno

              Botman

Hall Burn         Schar Trips

                Pope

 Its been a while. Schar's gonna be fuming, though.

I know schar’s played there before, but I reckon Botman would be sold there - obviously wouldn’t really go for it all personally, but just for arguments sake in utilising what we have as have done have a DM and I can’t really see who we’d sacrifice long-term if we did get one. Just gotta keep faith in Eddie and see what he does in the in and coming games .

Just a reminder of how bad things we’re and how far we’ve come. Fully believe my man DigBick with this one.

He'd have been either loaned to a shit Champo club or sold for 10 million if he'd come here anyway under that lot.

£4.5m was a lot of money to go through all that paperwork mind. Charners forte was licking stamps and running to the post office, a bit much to ask him to sort work permits and the like.
