Newcastle try to tempt Lloris

Martin Hardy: Newcastle United have made a move for the Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris on a season-long loan deal.

The 36-year-old former France captain has lost his first-team place at Spurs and been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, which has yet to come to fruition.

Newcastle’s approach has come out of the blue, and there would have been no loan fee involved, but Lloris has so far turned down the switch to the north east.

Lloris has fallen down the pecking order at Tottenham

Eddie Howe has let Karl Darlow join Leeds and wants another experienced goalkeeper to join the club. He has first choice Nick Pope but Martin Dubravka, who lost his first team place to Pope, is keen on a move. Newcastle did sign Loris Karius on a short-term deal last season and that has been extended for a further season.

However, Howe still wants another goalkeeper and that led to a move for World Cup-winner Lloris.

If Lloris does not find a club this summer, there is a possibility his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium could be ended by mutual consent.

He's absolutely shite.

What job though? Dummett was never great, but injuries and lack of playing time means he'd be a risk even for a Championship team, and Ritchie's legs went years ago. He's a sub appearance at best. Might as well give that time to a youngster and move them on.

Both are a waste of any place for squad registration, and if we're so hamstrung by FFP, then their wages off the books would help more than any contribution they'll give us on the pitch. 100% behind them being around the club training, going into coaching, but their playing days here are over, and that should reflect with lack of a playing contract.

I do agree that they both shouldn't be near the 1st team. Ideally (without FFP constraints), we would be buying 1st choice players such as Tonali, Isak and Bruno etc and getting the likes of Burn, Miggy and Longstaff to be the rotation players but that's not going to happen.

With the volume of games we will have this year, they of course will get minutes when the first team are fatigued or injured. But to replace them with players who are slightly better would further squeeze our transfer kitty for this season.

I can fully understand why Eddie Howe has chosen to give them short extensions as quantity and quality is important. Quality wise, we have done that with signings of Tonali, Barnes, Livramento and Hall. Quantity wise, short term anyway, it makes sense to keep Dummett and Ritchie. I'm pretty certain Ritchie won't be on the same wages he was on before.
