Not for me.  Lots of Nick Hornby-lite pieces for me.

Each to their own, of course.  I just find that misty-eyed football writing bores me.

Yeah agreed. I liked the first few but these days it gets right on my tits and I rarely get past the first few paragraphs (sorry George if you're reading).

I thought he was good at the Times as the Times don’t have to churn out as much club specific material, so you get the good stories only - the Times doesn’t want to print 8 Nufc stories a week.

At the Athletic you get these misty eyes stories about the colour of players sofa cushions as they need the volume, not just in print but for a podcast just on Newcastle so you get the good stories amongst piles of filler content

i dont think it’s Caulkin specific I think it’s an issue with the athletic - as the whole site is full of aimless drivel

Caulkin’s style and tone was perfect for the Ashley years. It reminded people of the passion the football club lost. It reminded people things weren’t always this way and didn’t have to be this way.

In our present state I’m far more interested in behind the scenes insights, and there doesn’t seem to really be anyone with that access.

Also putting friendships aside to stay objective. He was good mates with Steve Harper and I think that affected what he wrote at times.

And Bruce. Protected him like crazy during his reign. That fucking podcast was like RAWK at times with the fucking elephant in the room (quite literally an elephant an'all) being ignored all whilst laughing at Joelinton and shithouse Payne wheezing his way through sausage jokes.

3 tossers iyam.

Ornstein the most reliable for transfers imho.

Caulkin for soppy shite and client journalism.

Onana? If we sign him, I don't know what Amadou.

Seriously though - the profile of player we have been linked too recently are Howe-ball specialists. I think Onana is a Howe signing for sure. At least it seems his job is safe.

Personally - I don't like the idea of signing so many players that are specific to a manager's profile atp.

Big, strong, athletic types.

Jose likes this ?

Probably called it 100%. I subscribe to the Athletic but there is a lot of tosh to trawl through. But then again  I pay something like £1 a month, so I can't really complain about the quality and to be fair there is some good stuff of there.

I'm an occasional listener to the podcast and it's fine, I guess it would annoy me more if I listened to it week in week out when there isn't actually that much to say. But isn't that really the listener's fault for a lack of imagination in their choices?

I didn't even listen to his podcasts, just picked up on his writing when he was with the Times which is absolute drivel these days. They lock you in on a 3 month cancellation period from what I remember. I should have shot them out a long time ago but old habits die hard.

The athletic is fantastic for the American sports mind, although basketball has 4 games a week and has a lot more off field drama than football. Some of Waughs stuff is really good too.

Do people really believe that bloke, he got lucky once, he’s a bit like that idiot Casey

I don’t think he got lucky in fairness, I do think he does or did get little bits of information. However since then he’s taken it up a level and now regularly posts bollcks.
