I'd take any upgrade on what we have at RW, so long as the price is reasonable. We don't need every transfer to be 40m+ I agree with you here. If there isn't an obvious big hitter, then I think we should try and improve still with a player that doesn't break the bank, but that might over achieve given an opportunity. Whether that guy is Reiss Nelson I have no idea. It is interesting, as @Matt1892 mentioned, that we went after him last summer, when his contract was up. Suggests we have some intel on him that we like. Edited August 8, 2024 by KaKa

I would not want to spend £20m (or anything really) on a player who is a minor upgrade. Improving massively when and where we can is how we got to where we are so quickly. It's very different though if we think that £20m player is undervalued / has a much higher ceiling. If we think Reiss Nelson is that then great. Sibierski
Nelson is at the age where what you see is what you get. For our position, I'd rather stay clear. Bit different if he was a few years younger and playing quite a bit and was raw.

If this is the route we wanted to go down we should have gotten Callum Hudson Odoi instead he had much more calibre and had been linked with Bayern for 60m, and Forest bought him for 3m! So that’s a no brainer, not 20m or whatever on Nelson who has never done anything major

timeEd32
You can critique various parts of our transfer strategy, but we are virtually flawless on talent spotting and development since the takeover (especially after the desperation of January 2022, not that that was bad by any means): Pope - hit Botman - hit Targett - we know he's solid; just bad luck Isak - hit Gordon - hit Tonali - jury still out Tino - hit Minteh - hit Barnes - hit Hall - hit Once Tonali repays us this season we're basically flawless. Totally fair to question how we've allocated our money in terms of the cost, which positions we've prioritized, or whether we should have had better info from the Italian underworld, but Howe and Nickson have not missed on the very basic question of "is this player good?" Generally agree with you. Harvey Barnes wouldn't necessarily have down as a 'hit' just yet. Would personally say the jury is still out on that one. Whether that was the optimal use of funds can very much be debated.

Jonas
Under normal non-FFP circumstances Barnes would be undoubted great signing. Not Man United money, young, very productive.
The Prophet
Transfer market: Newcastle have been investigating the situation of defender Luiz Felipe in recent days, formerly of Betis and Lazio and currently at Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. The English team likes the profile of the 27-year-old athlete and is considering taking further action. It is worth remembering that the clubs have the same owner, the Saudi Arabian Sovereign Fund. The Brazilian naturalized Italian has a contract for two more seasons with Al-Ittihad.
nufc4eva
We have generally bought very well last few years and have added a lot of quality. Still a bit to go but trust the transfers they make as maybe 1 miss with Wood but that was at a desperate time. Every other signing proving a hit, even Barnes, injury didn't help but you can see what he brings and style we play, he's a excellent player on form and will score fair few next season if stays fit. Dan Burn, excellent value for what he's offered last few years, no pace but fits in the team, leader at the club and pops up with odd goal. Need to shift Almiron and Longstaff out or keep as squad players and we are a pretty good shout for 4th-6th. If we get Guehi that's as good a back 4 as any outside Man City and built to press towards midfield.
