Any functional transfer system would have active feedback/input from Howe. With that said, in any functional system, an elite DoF who's performed time and again at multiple clubs can't have a manager calling the shots over his head. Surely all'd agree that Howe is at his best when he's managing the squad. Yes, we don't know Guehi was solely a Howe move. But it does look like one. You did say to keep Mitchell and Howe segregated and not pick off the Howe wish list.

We’ve got all the right people in the right places now. Mitchel is known for unearthing gems and I’m sure we’ll see those in the medium and long term. Occasionally when a big player becomes available though there’s no harm in going for them whether it’s a Howe biased, Mitchel biased or dual decision. Like any working relationships one needs to respect the others viewpoint otherwise it won’t work. For what we need right now Howe and Mitchel are ideal. No definitive press about this, so: a) it is lined up and we need to get Guehi/an affordable option in first; b) it wasn’t a goer for whatever reason; c) it was all a load of bollocks. If, IF, we signed Yilmaz and Guehi then that would be two of my top five (realistic) wish list from the Euros and I’d/we’d all be cock a hoop about our prospects this season. Nobody, not even Man City, would feel confident about playing against a forward line of Gordon, Isak and Yilmaz. We would run most teams absolutely ragged. Coffee_Johnny
I wonder how much not (yet) being able to move on players who are clearly surpass to requirements is hampering us in terms of what we can offer for players we want? There’s been a lot of talk about Miggy, but what about Dubravka, Lewis, Fraser, Hayden off the top of my head. Are there others? Wonder how much it would spending power it would release? STM
3 hours ago, Upthemags said: dont think any level of spin makes Marc Guehi worth 65m tbf. Think the league agrees as well, as that seems ballpark of Palace's estimate, and no one seems to be coming close of that valuation, ourselves included. Worth pointing out - smart clubs don't go around plunking down 15m extra cash in a PSR world just because X player fits the system well. That's just a surefire way to be unprofitable, as you'll never make back what you expended. What we really need is to give Mitchell the reins to do what he does best, and let Eddie do what he does best, and keep them segregated best we can. A Monaco/Mitchell style system where we bring in scores of youthful talent on cheap, both to grow the first team and make profitable transfer business is what's needed to press on. Guehi never fit the bill and was clearly straight off the Eddie wishlist, and I hope PIF will have the cajones to say to him in future windows that transfers aren't his turf anymore. I disagree with pretty much all of this.
Bimpy474
Just imo, a manager should always have a say in transfers. He knows what his teams needs more than most, he may not get his first choices, but what players he does get, he should have had input on. While I don't want a manager to have the freedom to go mental, I'm no fan of the here's the players, get on with it system. It has to be happy medium struck in player buys. arnonel
I think the bid on Guehi suggests the plan is to challenge top 4 this year and that they think this is realistic. If they didnt, and the plan was to challenge top 4 next season, we would be going after someone we can develop.

Or does it “ease slowly towards a widely signposted and known closure time and date with an ever diminishing amount of space to get deals through over the course of the period? I believe it’s the latter, despite SSN’s dramatisation of the former description. However, Jim White can’t get a bone on unless the window comes crashing to an abrupt stop. buzza
I disagree, we need to improve the team just like all the clubs around us in the top half of the table are doing. I think It would also send a quite negative message to our current players if we are preaching to them that our aim is to compete at the top... but our tranfers don't show that! We need two signings (RCB & RW) who can slot into the first team and improve us instantly. I honestly dont think it is such a big ask...

I don't think this is entirely true, there's plenty of examples of clubs not making their biggest signing of the Summer till the final few days of the window. Even us a couple years ago with Isak. I know that was spurred on by Wilson getting injured, but even before that when it was looking like Pedro it wasn't going to happen till towards the very end of the window. The lack of time tends to focus minds on both the buying and selling side.

If Guehi doesn't sign what a total waste these last 2 weeks have been. I think that's unfair for a couple of reasons. Firstly there's every possibility we have been looking at other targets over the past two weeks so they won't have been wasted whether he signs or not. Secondly, yes it's always best to have business wrapped up early but we've spent half of the transfer window with a Sporting Director on gardening leave and his replacement has only been in situ for about a month.
