NUFC Transfer Rumours

Okay, I've looked at the clip again. Eddie actually said that we 'probably' wouldn't be looking to bring anyone in from outside, so I'll modify my reaction. He's trying to dampen expectations, but in a perfectly realistic way.

I think the main issue that the club is struggling with is that in order to bring in a player who will improve the first team at this point, it would need to be someone of Champions League standard, and what player of CL standard is going to choose a club which doesn't look like they'll qualify for the CL? They would have other options.

We could either over-pay to overcome that obstacle, or bring in someone who is not quite of the standard that we'd like, and neither of those possibilities are tempting.

I get all that but surely the 3rd option is you scout someone with immense talent and potential and roll the dice a bit otherwise we’ll never sign anybody 🤷‍♂️ We are going to have to start doing things differently and this is surely exactly the situation where Mitchel earns his crust?

Pretty sure we'll be looking to do that if the right player becomes available, Eddie is probably just being a bit cute.

He's not gonna say we're gonna spend because that'll put the price up. Why would you give away your hand?

He’s also not gonna say it, because we don’t have the money to do it.

This isn't me being a smart arse but isn't pretty much common knowledge that we tried to sign Guehi?

Even if the fee wasn't 70m, let's say 40m to be conservative, we obviously have some wriggle room.

Reading between the lines, perhaps it's a squad size issue that we are dealing with. We can't afford to bring one in without releasing wages or squad space.

Obviously our PSR issues are there for us all to see but it's all a bit confusing exactly where we stand.

I’m pretty sure if we had signed Guehi, or anyone else for that kind of money, we would have then needed to sell before the June deadline again. We don’t have money spare without selling. I’m not sure if selling Miggy would be enough to cover a big signing.

I suspect they will look to get max value for Almiron, Trippier and possibly Longstaff and anyone else that has decent wages and are surplus like Targett in this window.

If that happens and we free up some wages, I can see possibly one player coming in if someone they want is available.

Sighing a £50m player on £100k a week would only cost £7.5m in this seasons PSR account. Am sure that’s within headroom, and if it isn’t it only needs a relatively small sale.

IMO a bigger factor will be player availability

I'm sure you're right about the first part, but buying anyone now rather than last August makes them not far off 50% cheaper in terms of this year's PSR balance.

I believe we did have wiggle room to buy in August without a sale, just not £50m's worth, so throwing in a Miggy deal ought to make it work for us.

As I've said before though, on balance I'm pretty happy with us not spending this January. I'd only really change that for a special opportunity like a distressed sale.

Has Eddie ever said ”we will be active on the market” or anything like that? Seems like never says anything.

He never has and never will be telling the truth about what we are actually planning to do, don’t know why anyone reads into it at all.

Broke cunts trying to whip up interest in one of the players:

Newcastle are one of the clubs interested in Barcelona defender Eric Garcia, 23, but the formerManchester City man wants to stay at the Nou Camp and fight for a first-team place. (Sport - in Spanish)

Logical decision:

Newcastle will let England striker Callum Wilson, 32, leave on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the current season. (Football Insider)

We've been recruiting young players who show potential for the future from all over the world and that opportunity may occur again in January, but what I think people are hoping for is a player who can fit into the first team almost immediately.

I think there are several reasons why Eddie has wanted to damp down expectations of that happening. One factor is that a couple of years ago, there were several areas that needed strengthening, so there were plenty of options. Now I think we're only looking at centre back and right-sided forward. Furthermore, we're unlikely to win a transfer battle with a Champions League club, and the player's current club needs to be willing to sell half way through the season.

We've done well in picking up players of quality whose form has dipped a bit, and where the bigger clubs' interest has faded as a result (eg Isak, Gordon, Tonali). That would still be a possibility for January, I'd have thought, but overall we may be looking for a needle in a haystack here.

What came across to me in Eddie's interview on Match of the Day is that he genuinely feels he can get more out of the current team, and that there's no need right now to buy in haste or take a risk. Tonali has found his feet at last, Bruno is pushed further forward, and the dynamic of the team is changing. Some of our attacking play in the last three weeks has probably been the best I've seen since Eddie arrived.

Yeah I agree with that. I think they’ll go relatively big in Jan (say RW) only if they can get a player who they’re pretty sure will really add something to the first team both in time but also add something different now and who creates greater depth. Or if someone suddenly became available such as the Gordon situation. This would also depend on outgoings in Jan.

I think we wait and try for Dibling in the summer.

You would choose him over Mbuemo/Semenyo/Bakayoko?

I think we would see a "Lewis Hall" style first season if Dibling were to come here. Don't see that happening with any of the other three.

I’d pick him over Semenyo definitely, not seen Bakayoko tbh so can’t comment on that.
