Personally I'd give Krafth another year as a relatively low cost FB/CB cover. Particularly if Trips goes.

Definitely. He's proven a very capable deputy under Howe and can cover 2 positions we always seem to pick up injuries in

Kyle Walker-Peters is an absolute no brainer IMO.

If we have European football next year, we really need competent, versatile players who can step in. He could be cover to Hall and Livramento.

I always liked him as a youngster and I think hes been really unfortunate to have played for shite teams and managers.

Newcastle make Mooney move

According to The Sun, Newcastle United have approached St Mirren over the signing of young forward Evan Mooney.

Chief Football Writer Robert Grieve reports that Newcastle and Arsenal both made official approaches for the 17-year-old last night, signalling their interest in landing the teenager.

It’s believed neither club have launched a bid as of yet, but a formal approach has left the Scottish Premiership side braced for ‘serious bids’ as a number of top clubs track the striker who can also operate down the right.

Mooney has bagged a goal and an assist in just 61 minutes of league action for St Mirren this season, scoring in their 3-2 win over St Johnstone and coming off the bench to set up a stoppage time winner against Rangers on Boxing Day.

Wincey must have some grandkids about the right age we could be scouting too.

Looking forward to seeing Carol Malia’s brood being signed up soon.

If players like Lascelles and Krafth are staying it should be for emergencies only.

Schar should be backup CB next season imo.

More than likely tripps will be off so Krafth would be back up fullback.

Lascelles if he wants to stay I'm sure we will keep him. Plus he could come in handy if we need a setpiece beast.

Then we need a better back up fullback, otherwise we're weaker than we are now.

I don't think Lascelles is good enough personally, and off the back of an ACL he might come back worse.

I wouldn’t be too upset if Krafth and Lascelles are offered in year extensions, but I’d prefer us to be a bit more agressive and start to create pathways for young players (current or future)  to occupy these “break in case of emergency” squad roles. Since we’re after a first team RCB anyway it should be Schar moving down a place in the pecking order and then youngsters padding out the squad and getting game time when the situation allows.

Not the finished article but I really want Dibling. Feels like us and him would be a match made in heaven. Plenty of game time for him, How Howe (not barking) has improved young players getting into England team and so on.

Schar and Krafth. Gillespie as training ground filler. Dubs if he wants to.

On the fence about Lascelles…he might want to move for playing time. Let Wilson and Ruddy walk.

Doesn't this feel a PSR nightmare? Several players over 30, some can stay but some need replacing. Problem is you cant easily buy what you need to replace it all at same time. And by time you do, other players become in need of urgent replacing.

One of the key answers is fantastic scouting for youngsters and bringing them in cheaper. You always have to be planning well ahead to make it pay off and work.

Aside from Schar none of those players are first team players, let alone critical to our future. Seems like good squad management letting most of their contracts expire and rejuvenating the squad.

But you cant eplace them at same time and strength existing weak positions and depth. I know some of it overlaps, but PSR forces you to carry more aging, and my point is when players like Schar are worth letting go then someone else will also need replacing.

I don’t understand your point I’m afraid. I’d say Lascelles’ role (playing, not leadership) in the squad should be taken by someone like Alex Murphy, and Krafth’s by someone like Leo Sahar, with Schar, Kelly and Burn deputising as reserve center backs. We need to get promising young players in, develop them and have them in and around the squad to eventually become first team players or sold for decent fees. That makes more sense from a PSR perspective than holding on to aging fringe players too long. I’d hazard a guess that the likes of Lascelles and Krafth command higher wages than out entire U21 team combined.
