The culture of the club is all wrong and that's their biggest issue. Buying from other PL clubs for a slightly inflated fee isn't bad transfer policy if you want to be a club that competes for titles. And to be honest with PSR squeezing the PL now there's a chance you might actually start to see that fees aren't that different. Yeah, but it's those big fee signings that have screwed them over. They hardly ever buy at any kind of decent value. They even managed to overpay massively for unproven players. Due to PSR we'd be even more screwed if we go down that route. I think we need to be more balanced, especially as the squad on the whole needs improving, with European competition now also in play.

Yeah, it does seem our scouts tend to be on the right track a lot of the time, and it's something we need to take advantage of.
Sean Posted yesterday at 11:00 Share Posted yesterday at 11:00 (edited) Did we really miss out on signing Maddison, Paqueta etc or did they miss out on joining us? We are an attractive proposition to a larger number of players than ever before - in part because of the attitude of those who did join being up for the challenge - feels like vindication of Howe's narrow focus in terms of player recruitment (which I'll admit used to wind me up a bit). Sibierski Posted yesterday at 11:16 Share Posted yesterday at 11:16 We can safely rule out Hujsen. Far too much noise, and probably agent driving to get other clubs to make a move.

I don't think this is necessarily the case, there's been a fair bit of noise around several signings we've made and then the Khusanov one, everyone knows we wanted him for a while and he chose Man City. If we sign Trafford in the summer that'll be another that we've publicly courted for what will feel like 18 months.
Unbelievable Posted yesterday at 11:39 Share Posted yesterday at 11:39 15 hours ago, southernmag said: Agreed, there are plenty more Huijsens in the sea. We need to stop being lazy and beta, picking them up for exorbitant prices a year after other clubs made their move. There are not, which makes our decision to (presumably) not follow up on our reported interest last year so frustrating. Lad will likely be making his Spain debut this week ffs. We could have had a real, potentially world class talent on the books for the price of your average Championship player.

Sibierski Posted yesterday at 11:48 Share Posted yesterday at 11:48 Think we will drop £50m on a player, but on someone that’s playing at the top level International Team/Europe. I won’t be surprised if noise comes out we will make a move for Guehi again around that price point.
janpawel Posted yesterday at 12:03 Share Posted yesterday at 12:03 Huijsen seems nothing like Khusanov in style or attributes, I'd assume we want a very specific profile to partner Botman long term. So don't think we will go for Huijsen imo Though he looks like he'll go to the very top

That will drive commercial revenues and allow us to try and match our competitors’ deals through APT. The Brighton model has a ceiling and we’re already there. We need to break through before we lose more ground. I’m sure there’s a middle ground to be found but first and foremost we need to bring in the best young players we can (that can make a near immediate impact) or risk falling further behind. Brighton themselves are doing this by signing the likes of Minteh. A lot of our activity will depend on what European competition we end up in. Ultimately, the price someone was bought for last summer doesn't matter. We sold Minteh for 4x what we paid after 12 months - yeh he played in Europe but he mostly played at a lower level. He's a brilliant signing at £8m. At £30m, first year in the PL at 20 - he's playing to the level you would expect just about. The bit of pedigree and trajectory he has justifies the fee. Same with Huijsen potentially. I'm pretty confident we'll land a good CB whoever we eventually sign. There's a lot of talent out there. It's RW that's a bit more tricky and more varied profiles. We would be in trouble again very soon. We really need a squad anyway, with RCB and RW being top players. Doesn't mean they have to be 50-60 million players still. We don't have a single very good keeper (Pope and Dubs are okay), our defence is aging, our 2nd striker is leaving on a free, we don't have a right winger of any sort except Murphy... Our squad was too thin last time in the UCL, let's not make same mistake again.

Conjo Posted yesterday at 12:58 Share Posted yesterday at 12:58 Collins is the next Bramble. Generally plays very well, but will cost you quite a lot of points over a season due to dumb mistakes/lapses in concentration. No thanks.
