Is he supposed to be our no.1 keeper with Pope no.2? Or we targeting 2 new keepers?

If we go for someone like that you would imagine Pope would be no 1. with Jaouen being back up until he's ready to take over.

That would be annoying.

Really sensible keeping Pope because hes in the last year of his contract, but he needs to be backup next season

I don't mind tbh. I know Pope is making mistakes more these days, but I don't know if there is a genuinely good keeper we can source with our funds at the moment. We probably need to target other areas as more of a priority.

Yeah similar take over here - possibly give him a month or two to be ready - then put him in

Given what I have seen (granted it’s Utube) - he is ready for a step up - I think he’ll be our sole GK signing

Not including a Gordon replacement, a first choice goalkeeper and a new RW would be my priority. A striker a close third.

Agreed. I don’t think we should underestimate how much an impact it has on team confidence having a dodgy keeper has. Everyone drops back 10 yards plus struggle to hang on to wins… regardless of anything else, securing a solid keeper must be number 1 priority.

From Eddie's comments on friday, I wouldn't rule out Ramsdale staying, if he wanted to, and the price was right with Soputhampton.

Maybe we jettison Shaka Dimas, Ruddy and Gillespie, and go with Pope, Ramsdale and this new French lad comes in to take over #1 in a couple of years?

Not saying I agree with it, but maybe thats EH's thinking?

We cant be keeping Ramsdale, that would be rather silly.

Agree, and might just be reading into what EH said on friday, but wouldn't rule it out.

Eddie Howe has made it clear that Aaron Ramsdale's future is now in Southampton's hands ahead of the expiry of his loan spell at Newcastle United.

The Magpies paid £4million to loan Ramsdale and have the option to buy the England international, but Howe has suggested that his price tag will dictate whether he extends his stay at United. The Saints - rocked after being expelled from the Championship play-offs - may need to consider every cash deal carefully after missing out on a £200m Premier League jackpot.

Howe signed Ramsdale for a second time last summer, having worked with the 28-year-old for a second time since their AFC Bournemouth days together. Ramsdale kept Nick Pope out across the winter months but ends the season back on the bench.

Asked if he will sign Ramsdale, Howe said: "I've really enjoyed working with Aaron again. I think he's an unbelievable lad.

Eddie Howe admits Newcastle United have been overtaken by three surprise rivals

"Every time that I've worked with him, I've always had a great feeling about his personality and what he brings to the group - very, very positive guy.

"He's actually become part of the squad so quickly and a really positive part of the squad. Very good off the pitch, very good in supporting the goalkeeper, who's playing and he's played a lot of games this year.

"I think he'd be really pleased with his return in terms of minutes and what he's given the team.

"I think we've seen a big improvement from the moment that he came to his level, his training performances, his game performances. I think have been really strong."

Howe then hit the ball into Southampton's court as far as making the £20m-rated star into a permanent signing. He said: "Let's see what happens in the next stage of his career. We're not in control of what happens with his future; that'll be Southampton's choice, but I can only speak really highly of him."

Eddie never slags off a player that leaves. Remember when ASM left. Everyone knew he wasn’t a Howe player in in his plans, yet he always spoke glowingly about him.

I think he's a great number 2.

For the 17/20m they want other than accepting warning the bench on good wages I dont see an upside here.

Happy to have spent the reported 4m on the punt/experiment and relieved it wasn't an obligation to buy.

I think that was probably just Eddie in diplomat mode. If he was seriously considering keeping Ramsdale that would be a sacking offence in it's own right in my book.

I would say GK is quite high on the priority list.

Pope starting next season would be chucking points away

I thought the same until I saw Ramsay in goal.

Definitely it should be. I haven't heard us linked to any outstanding first choice GKs yet though, unless I've missed something. Which tbf is very possible since I'm not checking this thread regularly.

We can't go into next season with either of the current two as first choice, it's been one of the most glaring areas where we've been shit this season. Loads of unforced mistakes from Pope and his shit kicking, basically every shot going in when Ramsdale plays and he's rooted to his line, neither can keep a clean sheet for toffee.

Don't mind Pope staying as #2 for his final year and making a handful of appearances in cups or whatever but we need a good #1 keeper and it should be top of the list IMO. Probably worth 10-20 extra points based on this season.

It also doesn't mean that much in **checks notes** the month of May.

I am sure it's a position they will want to target pretty aggressively.
