Gordon/Barnes on left is solid. I wouldn’t go further than that tho

almiron, Murphy on the right is pretty dire imo.

Barnes at £35m is prob an opportunity they couldn’t miss. He’s a proven PL winger and scores goals. Just not giving me a hard on though.

Is that all we paid for Barnes?!

Fuck, seems a snip.

Tbh both Gordon and Barnes are frustrating to me. If Gordon got Barnes striking ability, or Barnes got Gordon’s pace and dribbling, we would have the best left winger in the world

That player wouldn't be playing for us.

I would say I do expect both to have development on their respective weaknesses after a few years under Howe - and that’s exactly why I am very disappointed by Gordon. It’s in fact a lot easy for him to develop his final ball, compare with Barnes who’s is naturally limited

I almost feel like congratulating you on making something so negative

How?

One thing that's immediately obvious about Gordon is that he's not the best striker of a ball nor is he a great dribbler or passer or anything standout from a technical perspective.

It's fairly uncommon for a player to get significantly better at the technical side. I guess you do see players grow in confidence and composure allowing themselves to hit their maximum technical level more often. Henry talks about slowing down before he shoots, which allows him to execute the technique he has rather than rush it. Gordon can get better at that but I don't think he'll ever be as consistently a clean striker of a ball as Barnes.

The composure and technique thing often goes hand in hand. Watching Eze recently, he just relaxs into his technique to score his goals.

This. It actually pisses me off. Neither have really grasped the position.

*I don’t mean this overly negative mind but just when you expect one of them to kick on and make it their own they hit a dry spell 😂

Barnes' top 10 goals for us so difficult to choose from

1. Wham 4-3 winner

2. Wolves 1-2 winner

3. City 1-0

4. Luton 4-4

5. Benfica 2-0

6. MU 3-1

7. USG 0-4

8. Benfica 3-0

9. City 2-1 winner

10. Villa 5-1

honourable mentions to the 3-3 equaliser against Wham and the tight angle left foot strike against Palace

£35 million was worth it for that winner vs West Ham alone.

Barnes, beats his man, HARVEY BAAARRNESS

Not sure what other players come to mind for getting both names mentioned.  But it has always made me grin that Barnes is regularly not just Barnes when the commentator announces it. But HARVEY BARNES

Absolutely love this one; would have it higher personally.

West Ham winner without question his best. Sensational strike and an amazing moment.

Yeah.  That one where he went 'fuck it.  I could slot this anywhere.  But I'm going for the Suarez/Barnes bar and in finish.'  Just because he can

Incredible to think that Barnes and Murphy keep out Gordon and Elanga in our best XI currently. A neutral might find that a complete headscratcher.

Both there on absolute merit and I hope they keep their places in our most important games. If we can beat City with them both, and both performing well, then there's no reason why they wouldn't be good enough against anyone else on their day.

Barnes close control and dribbling in tight spaces are better than Gordons.

Gordon played in 23/24 like his career depended on it, because it basically did. That player is a menace and would be first choice in terms of general play on and off the ball, and had a decent output too.

If he can't replicate that intensity regularly he's not that useful a player. This season he has looked like the 23/24 Gordon 2nd half vs Benfica and also for England.

That's not enough and I'd prefer not to see Barnes shunted off to the right or the bench to accommodate him anymore. Barnes has rarely let us down other than a few patchy runs that all wingers have, and his finishing is special.

Howe does not always follow logic when it comes to Gordon > Barnes.  As it stands, Barnes over Gordon all day long, but Howe (to his detriment sometimes) loves to get Gordon back in the mix, which I suspect he will do for the CL game.

Gordon has done very well at right wing at times for us and should be playing there competing with Murph and Elanga as long as Barnes is fit. Barnes is a goal threat even on his worse day = every reason he must start.
