Then what was the purpose of your post? It said "Yeah, so about Dan Burn..."

Because if the point was not that you thought that he would make a difference here, then I'm struggling to understand.

The point is that having Dan Burn in the ream isn't just about him vs the opposition RW, it's about how he fits in to the system we have. As mentioned last week, him being there means Trippier's the full back that gets forward.

Am I the only 1 that didn't think the whole game was THAT bad.

First half was as bad as anything. It was game over after 2-0, and Arsenal went into second gear.

I don't think that this game is a very good example of what works best, our entire team got ran over by a much better team. If we had started Burn, we might have been fuming about Dan Burn right now. Maybe we would've lost by even more. Impossible to tell.

Also, another thing that fucked me off tonight was the ref. Arsenal outclassed us and would have won regardless so it's not a biggy but the ref was so weak tonight. He, rightly, booked Odegard for chopping down Almiron as we're breaking at 0-0 in the 8th minute . I think it was their 2nd foul. He then allowed Arsenal to make another 13 more fouls without getting close to booking another player. Arsenal took the lead and were allowed to sit on it and kill any break we made chasing the game with a soft foul in the middle third that was never punished for the remaining 80+ minutes. When you're chasing the game and ref is just letting the winning team kill any/every attack you have without any punishment then you have no chance of getting back into it.

Arsenal were brilliant tonight and fully deserved it but they played the ref like a fiddle and he let them control the game. We need to learn from it and do that more

Read somewhere no team in the league has conceded more goals than us since the start of December - not even the likes of Sheff Utd.

We’ve conceded 31 goals in our 13 league games since the start of December. This is the same as Sheffield United, but we have played one game more.

Mentioned in another thread, it’s 25 goals in 10 PL games.. it’s shocking really considering how tight we were at the back.

It was clear from the start of the game that our plan was to sit tight, frustrate Arsenal and try to hit them on the break. Problem was their press was so good that we never got the ball moving forward, and from the endless play outside our box and all the corners conceeded, they scored a lucky goal.

What surprised me a bit was that after going one down, we continued to sit back, as if there was no plan for what to do if we went behind (unless the plan was that we do the same even if we go one down). We've shown a very good ability to get back in games the last few weeks, but it was almost as if we were caught sleeping ourselves by our own tactic to try to get Arsenal to sleep

Arsenal were brilliant and deservedly won, with crisp, confident passing as if they had a point to prove after Porto and the last game at SJP, even though they really didn't re us since Havertz should have been sent off in that game even before the correct VAR decision to allow our goal.

But I have to agree about the ref. Even though there were no individually contentious decisions, Bruno took multiple tackles from different players clearly knowing he was on a yellow card ban and couldn't respond. Credit to Bruno for not reacting except for one dicey moment.

On the plus side, what I will credit the ref for is having the ball smack off the back of his head to accidentally prevent a promising Arsenal attack in the second  half - he was the midfield defence we didn't have.

I've been saying it for a while re deliberate fouls (no attempt to play the ball) to stop us breaking has become a regular tactic against us. If Odegaard's was a yellow, which it was as it was clearly deliberate, then at least another 3 or 4 should have followed before HT.

Not a whinge as it wouldnt have altered the result but a ftustration as its happening every week and rules are there to prevent it being used repeatedly but the actions aren't taken.

To the point where, I don't know if Refs still go into the dressing room pre games to brief the teams but if they did, I'd be tempted to say "We're going to give the ball to Gordon in the first 5 mins, he's going to be upended with no attempt at the ball, you'll give the free kick, we'll do it again and someone else will deliberately foul him and you won't book them because its too far from goal and too early and the pattern of the game is set"

That was fine last season when we were fresh and our style of play caught people out, particularly first half of the season.

That tactic is going to burn Trippier out though. If we still want him at 34-35 to be as effective as he has been, you need the left-back to take up some of the flak and rotate who goes and who stays (ironically our goal coming from just that with Burn ).

Still a strong believer we go with Tino from now as he's more likely to do this over a 10-12 game period, and buy a more specialist left-back in the summer.

We can't ignore trippiers assists though. Still a extremely valuable player

Think we assume that the defence now is absolutely shocking but their workload compared to last season is off the scale, and that comes from a paper thin midfield and a unfit forward line

You know what it's like when you've played football, if your a defender and there's nobody ahead of you available to pass to, you start to make mistakes especially if youve been told to retain possession and not just kick it wildly anywhere

Something about us of late (most of this season) where we have just looked powederpuff and extremely complacent.

I've only just seen the highlights but it feels like teams don't even need to be exceptional to beat us. Just feels like one calamitous mistake after another.

Players fluffing clearances, pussy footed challenges, half clearances, absolute shite deflections.

Is it all just huff and puff after a gruelling season and not pushing to gain them extra edges.

It feels like a million miles away from last season. Like barely a whimper of life in comparison.

I'm not someone who thinks too deeply ([emoji38]) but can only assume it's fatigue from the remaining players we've got.

Do you think we'll sign another LB in the event we sign Hall for £30M?

If Targett is sold I think we would.

You look at the Everton game where we'd have 25 passes and end up going back to the keeper, they got it and just swung it into the area behind the midfield and they ended up with an effort on goal or at least a corner.

Players of way less quality but playing far more direct and effectively.

Some of the ones we have got away with are shockers, a long ball from the forest keeper (no flick on or clever movement) and they are in on a one on one situation, it's not even something you'd expect from relegation fodder

If we are buying him then why are we not playing him? Is it something like he hits a certain amount of appearances we've got to pay now and we can't because of FFP?

Having two midfielders who are able to bypass a press would have helped hugely last night obviously and you must wonder if Howe wants to scream at journalists to say that this was the reason we brought Tonali in to help out Bruno

Arsenal just like many other teams know they just need to mark Bruno out of the game and they can win the ball back easily

It looked to me like most of the team had half an eye on Tuesday's game. It looked a bit half-hearted.

I can't blame the players, but it's sometimes difficult to raise your game after a poor performance like that.

Longstaff can’t control a ball or tackle, Miley can’t really impose himself because he’s a child, Bruno can’t make a tackle because we can’t have him banned. Doesn’t matter what the game plan is with that midfield.

Makes me want to yell when I read or hear constant repeated expectations that Longstaff and Miley should be doing any better versus a midfield 3 of Odegaard, Rice and Jorginho. Do people really use their brain and have any levels of critical thinking? I didn’t think it needed much thought.

There's probably more to it, but two things that has contributed to this, I think, is 1. the most obvious one - injuries and 2. other teams raising their intensity against us to counter/nullify our approach (or get revenge? ). There has been quite a few times this season I've been thinking the opposing team out-newcastle'd us, not only yesterday.

Arteta’s taken that directly from Pep. It’s so transparent, and all that lip service at the beginning of the season meant nowt. Refs have got to get on top of this - and fuck blue cards, they have the tools right now.
