James Trafford: NUFC in talks with Burnley over £30m transfer (Various)

Still concerned about going with an inexperienced, young goalkeeper as our number one in such a big season. Would love to keep Pope as our number one and introduce Trafford slowly, with the ability to take him out of the limelight and have an assured, reliable counterpart. A couple of mistakes and a knock in confidence could leave us in a bit of crisis, and at 22 it is very likely those moments will come.

I think he will be a quality player in time, but there's a reason why goalkeepers often look at their best in their early-mid thirties.

I'd probably take the opposite approach and start him as number 1  as he'd be coming in off the back of an amazing season at Burnley and getting a big move so you'd expect his confidence to be sky high and we'd still have a brilliant keeper to fall back on if his confidence did drop. That's obviously reliant on Pope being happy to stay on as number 2, which he might not be as he's still one of the top keepers in the league.

Either way I think Trafford's a good signing

I think after the season he’s had, the 30m fee is quite reasonable. We’ll be getting one of the best goalkeepers in the league if it comes off.

Pope will push him if he stays.. but his kicking will ultimately see him as the backup eventually.

We could potentially have a full back line that are regular England international starters.

Some change from the Ashley years.

Can’t be spending £30m on a GK for them not to come in as number one from the word go.

I mean, you can. Bruno, Hall and Tonali had to wait. Why shouldn't he?

“Howe instead wants Trafford and Nick Pope, who will be 34 in April next year, to compete for the No1 spot at St James’ Park next season.”

Pope isn’t being sold. He’ll start the season number one and it’ll be up to Trafford to dislodge him.

Tonali played the first game of the season and scored.

Then couldn't get back into the starting XI when his ban was over.

Not really the same thing he was in & out the side that was largely a fitness thing because hadn’t played in a year

Started his first game less than a week after his ban ended didn't he?

And yet he couldn't get a run of games because of Sean Longstaff.
