While this window hasn't been great, he still has been given a bit hospital pass, so personally given how good he's been at other clubs, I'm willing to let it slide, if it happens again that's a different story.

His strength does seem to be about identifying talent, and given how far into the window we where when he joined with targets already identified its probable he's not been able to mold the scouting department to how he'd want, or he has done so but it'll be future windows where you notice the effects of it.

So I'm hoping going forward we start to sign players from the continent who fit the mold of those he signed for other clubs, and it'll be that he's judged on. One positive of this window is that we now have some PSR head room to follow that plan.

Was he given a hospital pass?

He was brought in after the Minteh/Anderson deals and Bruno's release clause expired.

My assumption is that the model isn't really in place yet.

The second part isn't what I meant. I meant that if Howe doesn't have as much control over recruitment as he would ideally want, he has total control over his preferred activity (coaching).

If you asked any manager if they want total power over everything, I'm sure they would mostly say they do. but most of the modern ones are clever enough to work in a new model. I don't think there are many, if any, elite sports club where the first-team manager is all-powerful over the organisation.

Yeah I think we are between two ways of doing things and it’s causing a lot of the issues we are experiencing. 70m for Guehi ffs the 3 of them need to get fucking real.

He says coaching is his preferred activity yes, but I’m not getting the impression he’d be thrilled with having players bought for him, he reiterated a few times yesterday he doesn’t want players which aren’t right etc and to be clear when he says aren’t right he means HE thinks aren’t right.

Imo in a DOF led approach the first thing which  needs to in place is the long term planning, how are we going to play? It has to be consistent regardless of the manager in this PSR era massive seize turnover simply isn’t possible so the plan must be long term and the club needs a DNA an identify.

When it comes recruitment I believe the head coach needs to be clear about the positions he wants to focus on and the attributes of the players for said position, I don’t think the head coach should be vetoing players mind, ultimately the head coach will always have a more short term view than the club should have and this the DOF’ job is to provide that long term balance for things.

as things stand I don’t think we have this.

That Caulkin and Waugh article paints him in a bad light and has me asking big questions about his belief in Howe.

It should go without saying, but if he (and Eales) are undermining Howe, they can both fuck right off.

If he didn't have belief in Howe, why would he have spent the whole window trying to bring in Guehi on huge money to try to give him the player he (presumably) wants? All we really know is that he failed to land Guehi, and there was no back up plan. Even that begs the question who is it that thought the alternatives weren't any better than what we already have? Was that Mitchell or Howe?

Not sure we all share that view.

Agreed, got great results and loads of credit in the bank but after we did great at first buying overseas with botman and isak we just stopped and bought British. I don’t know why or who is responsible for this but something in the system needs addressing as it seems to me a lot  of prem clubs don’t wanna deal with us.  I know I’m simplifying this but it seems obvious what we should do.

We stopped after Tonali, guessing they got burned by it and feel buying British is minimising risk.

I admit I am trying to speculate but imo

1. It should be Howe who wants Guehi so bad that he is willing to save the budget and wait till next window

2. Mitchell knows the consequence of doing so, but he choose to ignore it and follow Howe’s wish, because it’s Howe who would be accountable for the results, and then he could bring in his own people

I actually think this is probably correct

For me only one person wins that war if that's how it's going down, because the old model where a manager does everything is never going to work with FFP/PSR restraints. Mitchell is the one with the pedigree for buying low/selling high. Or at least I presume he is, I don't follow his career specifically.

Howe is a superb coach, that's what we need him to be responsible for. I would like to think he'll continue to have plenty of input into signings he wants, and I presume that's why we wasted a load of time chasing Guehi.

Yeah and the stories of Howe vetoing others also fits that as well - along with Ashworth reportedly struggling to work with him, and the Bournemouth fans post.

If we want to take a positive POV, and if Howe is really performing magic again, that we are on track to top 6 finish at January, we will try again for Guehi which we would be in the pole position. Guehi will be ours for the second half of the season

Sometimes gamble does pay off, even if it’s a bad one

Hmmm..makes me think Staveley and Mehrdad leaving so suddenly must have at least some relation to the mess that we're in. Fact is, we did spend a lot of money in the past and it was necessary at the time, but reality caught up with us. We have seen many big clubs spend their time.in the lower leagues previously because of the way they went about their business irresponsibly. Hopefully, we have averted that fate from befalling us, no matter how frustrating and dissapointing the window has been.

These Mitchell / Howe conspiracy theories are mental.

Mitchell hasn’t arrived and thought “what I’d really like as the sporting director of this club is a dreadful run of results, which will screw hopes of Europe and lead to star players leaving, so I can sack the manager and get someone else in”

I guarantee he hopes beyond hope Howe delivers CL football again. That would make his life much easier. If he wants his own people he can do that anyway next summer

Of course he wants that, but he (not just him) has made it so we only have a very slim chance of achieving it.

Mitchell does come across as a blagger, with all of his corporate buzz words and phrases. That sounds harsh and is a surface level judgement. But his actions this summer (or lack of) have backed up this impression.

I appreciate you could point to his work at other clubs, but I’d also argue that hopping from club to club for short periods also leads into the chancer impression he gives. How much of that work actually stemmed from him as well? We know football is full of blaggers who, incredibly, charm their way to the highest levels. Again, I know this may sound harsh, but I fear he is one of them.

I’d also say the actions of Eales during the last year tells me he is incompetent; his handling of the Mitchell / Howe relationship - clearly minimal communication with Howe over the whole thing - was ridiculous (which led to Howe publicly expressing his uncertainty).

I fear we’re being ran by incompetent people and PIF need to start again with the boardroom.

So, Paul Mitchell is sort of tied to where I live via him having kids with a local bird.

He drinks in a certain pub because of said family ties. I’ve been invited to meet him and have a chat via the landlord - however I don’t think he’s ready for the questions I might ask.

Sorry for being vague but happy to answer an questions asked directly.

What are the questions you might have for him? I look forward to reading the answers.

“Have you got a charizard shiny? And if so, what’s your price?”

”You’re on the toilet mid-shit and you hear an intruder enter your house. Do you finish the shit and then approach them or do you accost them with the brown stuff taking centre stage?”

Just don't be a prick and if the bloke clearly can't be arsed with the interrogation then leave him alone

I vote for leave the throne room immediately, gentle neck punch, leg sweep then bit of face sitting (pay attention to nasal positioning) to finish the job (-by). Am I right?

p.s. can the intruder please be Louise Taylor?
