Absolutely not having him being at fault for the goal. Our midfield pressed high, got bypassed and then Thiaw is an impossible position as there is an absolutely gaping hole in between the lines. If he goes man to man, he would be leaving a chasm in the middle of our defence.

Went to the ball like a headless chicken rather than staying in position, entire back line ended up badly positioned as a result.  Absolute basics of defending - it isn’t about being man-to-man, and the midfield wasn’t in a high press.  He was out of position - it’s a brief cameo and I’m sure he’ll go on to be much better, but that was schoolboy stuff

Of course people are at the ready to call him Bramble and Boumsong and blame him for the goal. What else would you expect?!

At the end there we were still closing down too aggressively in midfield and it played out exactly as you said because we were one man short.

Just really frustrating.

Didn’t say he was Boumsong, but that was Boumsong-esque - looked jittery on the ball and poor positional play.  He’ll be better than today, no doubt about it.

We were outnumbered in the box and you have to make a choice at some point. Made sense to take away the easy pass closest to the ball. Was just a moment of brilliance when he let it slide through to the next guy.

Honestly this is a bizarre take. I’ve just rewatched to make sure I was remembering right but the Liverpool player (Elliott?) gets the ball, Thiaw then engages and forces him to play the ball wide. That’s exactly what he is supposed to do, he does absolutely nothing wrong for the goal.

Fair enough, I disagree, but I’ll respect your take

You’re watching a different game to me, lads.  2-2 with seconds left you don’t step out of your line and out of your zone to attempt to close a pass

It wasn't great but the bigger issue was that we got overloaded 5 vs 4, Elanga was pretty slow tracking back too upon watching the replay - perhaps understandable given the work he put in.

Plenty of fingers could be pointed but ultimately the goal happens because we're down to 10 men and we've had to play 105 minutes+ of football.

Agreed - some of our players were understandably dead on their feet, which is always going to open up spaces.  You’re relying on those who aren’t to be on the ball.

Are you really advocating that Thiaw should be standing off and letting Elliott turn on the edge of the 18-yard box, with him then having the option of (a) shoot or (b) play the ball left into an overload? I mean that is just now how good defending works and if you believe that I probably can’t convince you.

it sucks we conceded but we were cooked the minute the middle got bypassed. Our only chance from there was a Liverpool mistake or Burn getting close enough to block the cross.

I do tbh - sometimes you invite a shot from distance to maintain shape.  A shot from outside the area needs to be very well struck to have a chance of beating the keeper - a player with acres of space 12 yards out has a much better one

Bit scary with the ball in the air. Hard game though to come into.

He looked a bit off the pace but just means he needs time to acclimatise for me.

He’s a football first defender. Looks to win it and play not win it and get rid. Which can be risky when you’re in a new league and not used to the speed of play. I don’t blame him too much for the goal though and think he’ll be a good signing.

Remember Botman against Spurs away last year, 4 mins in loses Solanke and got outmuscled for the header. It can happen to a centre back getting up to speed. No need to permanently doubt the quality or call them braindead etc.

Not going to read too much into the performance of a young lad coming into an unfamiliar back line v the Champions who have a man advantage like.

Don’t talk sense man

Did do a lovely turn not long after his weird header [emoji38]

That header was so bizarre, cushioned it down gently like a three foot pass to a striker when it needed clearing but he’s obviously quality technically with his feet
